The Route, Day by Day
Each leg of the journey mapped out — where the day takes you, what's actually on the ground, and things to consider when planning this tour.
Arrival in the Argentine Capital
Arrive at Ezeiza International Airport (EZE) and make your way into the city. Settle into your accommodation before heading out for a first look at Buenos Aires. The day is unstructured, leaving time to wander through the colorful La Boca district, the historic streets of San Telmo, or the elegant Recoleta neighborhood.

South to Patagonia's Trekking Capital
An early start for a flight south from Buenos Aires to El Calafate, the gateway to southern Patagonia. Upon landing, a three-hour overland journey continues north to El Chaltén. The drive marks a dramatic shift in landscape, as the flat pampas give way to the jagged peaks of the Andes. Settle in and, if time and energy permit, take a short warm-up hike on a local trail to stretch your legs.

DIY Reality Check: The journey from El Calafate's airport (FTE) to El Chaltén requires a separate, three-hour overland transfer, as El Chaltén has no airport. For independent travelers, this means coordinating a bus ticket with their flight's arrival. Multiple companies run this route, but seats often sell out, especially in high season, making advance booking highly recommended. This creates a point of failure: a delayed flight could mean a missed bus and the need to purchase a new, last-minute ticket, assuming any seats are left. Booking online can also be a challenge, with some operator websites causing errors when translated into English. A coordinated trip eliminates this entire chain of logistical risk, with a private vehicle waiting at the airport, ready to depart whenever your flight lands. Practical note on arrival in El Calafate: bags are checked for organic food, which is prohibited in this protected area. Eat anything fresh before landing or pack non-organic snacks.
Loma del Pliegue Tumbado Panorama
Today's objective is the 19km trek to the Loma del Pliegue Tumbado viewpoint. This is a less-trafficked trail that, unlike others in the area, gains elevation consistently without dropping into a valley. The reward for the steady climb is a full 360-degree panoramic view, taking in the Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre massifs from a unique perspective across the entire region. It's a full day on the trail, offering a comprehensive visual introduction to the park.
