Seoul to Busan: South Korea's Historic Cities & DMZ

Arrive in Seoul and check into the hotel. Use the afternoon to shake off jet lag before heading out on foot. Walk along the Cheonggyecheon Stream, an 8.4-kilometre restored urban waterway running through downtown, then navigate the dense, neon-lit shopping grid of the Myeongdong district for street food.

Board a city bus to navigate Seoul’s sprawling metropolis, where high-tech high-rises overlook ancient Joseon-era landmarks. Start at Gyeongbokgung Palace, the main royal palace built in 1395, to wander through its restored pavilions and visit the National Folklore Museum on the grounds. From there, head to Bukchon Hanok Village, a historic residential neighborhood boasting the city's largest cluster of traditional wooden homes, or hanoks. Wind through the narrow, stone-walled alleys to observe the classic tiled roofs and inner courtyards. End the afternoon in the antique-filled lanes of Insadong, a former royal painting hub now packed with traditional tea houses and galleries. The evening is open to dive into local markets for street food classics like bibimbap and kimchi.

Board a high-speed bullet train for the morning journey south through the Korean countryside to Gyeongju, the ancient capital of the Silla Kingdom. Head to Golgulsa Temple, a unique Buddhist site carved into a limestone cliff, for an overnight temple stay. This is a structured immersion into monastic life: learn traditional temple etiquette, watch a demonstration of Sunmudo (Zen martial arts), and participate in the evening prayer and drum rituals. Sleep in traditional ondol rooms, featuring heated floors with bedding arranged directly on the deck. Meals are strictly vegetarian temple fare, eaten in silence.

Begin with early morning meditation and a martial arts session before leaving the temple. Next, head to Gamcheon Culture Village, a hillside enclave of pastel-painted houses, steep staircases, and street murals. Dive into the city's culinary heart at the sprawling Jagalchi Fish Market, where fishmongers hawk live seafood along the docks, and browse the nearby Gukje Market, a historic trading hub dating back to the Korean War. End the afternoon walking through Yongdusan Park to see the 118-metre Busan Tower, leaving the evening free to explore the neon-lit waterfront or walk along the beaches.

Walk along the sands of Haeundae Beach and follow the coastal paths of Dongbaekseom Island to see the APEC House, built for the 2005 summit. Board the high-speed bullet train to return north to Seoul. Upon arrival, head straight to Namdaemun Market, Korea’s oldest and largest traditional market, where over 10,000 stalls sell everything from street food to local wares. In the late afternoon, ride the cable car up Mount Namsan to the base of the iconic N Seoul Tower, standing 480 metres above sea level, for panoramic views across the capital's vast skyline. Spend the evening exploring the modern districts of Gangnam or the Han River waterfront.

Travel north from Seoul to the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), the heavily fortified 4-kilometre-wide buffer zone that has divided North and South Korea since 1953. Spend three to four hours exploring this Cold War relic, where untouched nature has reclaimed the militarized borderlands. Return to the city to visit the massive War Memorial of Korea, an indoor-outdoor museum housing some 9,000 artifacts detailing the country's military history and the realities of the Korean War. The rest of the afternoon and evening are free to explore Seoul's diverse neighborhoods, like the international hub of Itaewon or the contemporary art galleries of the Samsung Leeum Museum.
