Best of the West: California, Utah & Las Vegas

  • The routeWritten as you'd travel it independently — where each day goes and what there is to do when you get there, following the same stops and activities G Adventures runs wherever you could arrange them yourself.
  • DIY Reality CheckWhere doing it yourself gets hard: permits, closures, bookings that sell out months ahead.
  • G Adventures includesBooked start to finish as one 13-day trip — you can't buy a single day of it. These panels show what their price covers each day, so you can weigh it against doing it yourself.

What It Takes to Coordinate This Route Yourself

Renting an ordinary private vehicle covers the 1,725 km of road legs easily, with no specialist driving required. But the administrative load is high: you'll need to coordinate 12 nights across 9 separate properties, where six of the stays are single nights and the longest is just a two-night stretch early on. That means packing up almost every morning, alongside managing 11 transport legs and threading stops into two city-to-city transfers. Booking the 19 activities is straightforward enough. What an organised route actually buys you here is the small group of peers to share the journey with, which is the one thing you can't self-source.

See how G Adventures handles it

Day 6 to Las Vegas is the anchor for this loop, positioned to bridge the granite hikes of Yosemite with the red rocks of Utah and the Grand Canyon. You'll spend hours behind the wheel of a rental car navigating Highway 1 on Day 2 and Route 66 on Day 11, with campsites waiting at most stops. You lose an hour crossing the Utah border on Day 7.

Towering granite peaks and deep desert salt flats give way to the neon of the Strip, combining backcountry camping in Yosemite and Zion with cheap eats and social hostel stays.

The Route, Day by Day

Los Angeles to Santa Margarita

Los Angeles and the Pacific Coast Highway

Day 1 of 13

Start early with a morning loop through Los Angeles in your rental car, ticking off the places you know from the movies: Beverly Hills' Rodeo Drive, a look at the Hollywood sign, and a run down Sunset Boulevard. Then leave the sprawl behind and point the car north onto the Pacific Coast Highway. Break up the drive with a lunch stop in Santa Barbara, a laid-back coastal city where you can grab something cheap and stretch your legs near the water. Continue up the coast to Santa Margarita KOA and pitch your tent while there is still light. Finish the day with a short drive over to San Luis Obispo for dinner before heading back to camp.

Pack up camp and swap the coastal breeze for the Sierra Nevada. You will drive inland today, breaking up the journey with a quick lunch stop in Fresno to stock up on cheap road snacks and ice. Enter Yosemite National Park through the Arch Rock entrance, where the massive granite walls immediately close in and the Merced River runs alongside the road. Set up your campsite in El Portal, then take a late afternoon walk to get your first look at the valley's towering cliffs before the evening chill sets in. Keep an eye out for local wildlife like deer and coyotes along the riverbanks as the sun goes down.

Deep in the Yosemite Valley

Day 4 of 13

Today is dedicated entirely to Yosemite's classic trails. Your best move is to hit the trailheads early before the park shuttles get crowded. Choose between the misty stairs of the Mist Trail up to Vernal Fall, or tackle the longer, demanding switchbacks of Nevada Fall. If your legs are shot, rent a cruiser bike on the valley floor to pedal under the shadow of El Capitan and watch climbers scale the sheer granite face. Grab a cheap sandwich for a picnic lunch by the river, and end the day swapping stories back at the campsite in El Portal.

From there, drive over the dramatic Tioga Pass, crossing the crest of the range at nearly 10,000 feet before dropping down the eastern escarpment.
