An Unfiltered Travel Guide & Photo Diary

Bosnia and Herzegovina: Wild Horses & City Sights

  • The routeWritten as you'd travel it independently — where each day goes and what there is to do when you get there, following the same stops and activities G Adventures runs wherever you could arrange them yourself.
  • DIY Reality CheckWhere doing it yourself gets hard: permits, closures, bookings that sell out months ahead.
  • G Adventures includesBooked start to finish as one 7-day trip — you can't buy a single day of it. These panels show what their price covers each day, so you can weigh it against doing it yourself.

What It Takes to Coordinate This Route Yourself

Packing your bag almost every morning is the reality of a seven-day run featuring five separate stays, where four are single nights before a final two-night stretch. Covering 530 km means managing seven transport legs. You can rent a car for the 400 km of road legs, but you must still book tickets for two public transport legs, coordinate a guided jeep safari on Day 2, and thread stops into two city-to-city transfer days. An organised route buys you the coordination of these logistics, six nights across five properties, and 12 activities, alongside a built-in small group.

See how G Adventures handles it

Day 6 in Sarajevo is the anchor of this route, giving you a completely free day to ride the funicular to the old Olympic bobsled track. The rest of the week builds toward this, using train legs on Day 4 and Day 5 to cut through the mountains from your rafting base in Konjic. You'll head out on a sunset Jeep safari in Livno on Day 2.

Rugged karst hills give way to historic river towns on a route linking wild horse safaris in Livno with backyard rakija tastings and late-night cevapi runs in Sarajevo.

The Route, Day by Day

Trebinje

Border Crossings and Riverside Stone Walls

Day 1 of 7

Land in the region and make your way to Trebinje, a quiet stone town tucked into Bosnia's southern tip. Shake off the travel day with a walk along the Trebišnjica River. Cross the arched bridges, wander through the gate into the old walled city, and scout the market square for tomorrow's fruit stalls before grabbing a cheap local beer at a riverside cafe.

On the ground

  • Arrive in Trebinje and check into Hotel Leotar
  • Self-guided evening walk along the Trebišnjica River
  • Explore the historic walled old town and market square
  • Connect with fellow travelers over local drinks

Počitelj, Kravica & Livno

Ottoman Stone Forts and Sunset Highlands

Day 2 of 7

Head north toward the stone outpost of Počitelj, an Ottoman-era fortress town built into the cliffs above the Neretva River. Climb the steep stone stairs to the tower for views over the artists' colony below. From there, head west to the Kravica Waterfalls. The 25-meter-high falls form a natural amphitheater; if the weather holds, jump in for a cold swim under the fig trees.

The day ends with a drive up to the high, windswept plateaus of Livno. Trade the highway for a rugged overland vehicle to track the herds of wild horses that roam the mountain ridges at sunset. Wind down back at the lodge with an outdoor barbecue and a campfire under the stars.

On the ground

  • Explore the medieval stone fortress of Počitelj
  • Swim in the natural pools of Kravica Waterfall
  • Sunset overland safari to spot the wild horses of Livno
  • Overnight: Continental Adventure Resort (Guesthouse)
  • Total travel distance: 250km overland

Blagaj & Mostar

Mystic Springs and the Iconic Arch of Mostar

Day 3 of 7

Leave the highlands behind and head south toward Blagaj, where the Buna River gushes straight out of a massive cavern in a karst cliff. Right at the water's edge sits a 16th-century Dervish monastery; walk the stone paths around it and feel the spray from the spring.

By afternoon, you are in Mostar. The city is famous for its stone arch bridge spanning the Neretva River. Walk the narrow, cobblestoned alleys of the old bazaar, watch local divers plunge off the bridge into the freezing water below, and learn about the city's complex history. Find a quiet spot by the river for Turkish coffee or a plate of ćevapi as the day cools down.

On the ground

  • Visit the historic 1520 Dervish Monastery in Blagaj
  • See the source of the Buna River at the base of a karst cliff
  • Walking tour of Mostar's historic center and old bazaar
  • View the iconic Stari Most (Old Bridge) over the Neretva
  • Overnight: Hotel Tere
  • Total travel distance: 150km overland

Konjic

Rafting the Neretva and Cold War Relics

Day 4 of 7

Catch the morning train north to Konjic, a scenic mountain route that cuts through deep river canyons. Drop your bags at the riverside lodge and gear up for a white-water rafting run down the Neretva River. The water is crystal-clear and bracingly cold, taking you through steep gorges with a break for a riverside barbecue lunch.

Spend the afternoon exploring Konjic. Your best move is booking a spot to visit Tito's Bunker, a massive, top-secret atomic shelter buried deep inside a mountain that remains frozen in the communist era of the former Yugoslavia.

On the ground

  • Scenic train journey from Mostar to Konjic (70km)
  • White-water rafting excursion on the Neretva River
  • Riverside barbecue lunch with the crew
  • Option to tour Tito's secret Cold War atomic bunker
  • Overnight: Motel Vila Bijela (Guesthouse)

Sarajevo

Mountain Rails and Sarajevo Street Food

Day 5 of 7

Board the local train for the final mountain stretch into Sarajevo, the country's vibrant capital. The rail line winds through tunnels and valleys, delivering you straight to the heart of a city where East meets West.

Skip the tourist traps and dive into the local food scene immediately. Join a walk through the narrow alleys of Baščaršija, the old Ottoman bazaar. You will sample traditional Bosnian coffee, fresh burek from local bakeries, and slow-cooked stews at family-run eateries, learning how the city's history is baked into its flavors. Spend the rest of the afternoon wandering the Austro-Hungarian streets or finding a courtyard cafe.

On the ground

  • Scenic mountain train ride from Konjic to Sarajevo (60km)
  • Guided culinary tour of the historic Baščaršija bazaar
  • Sample traditional Bosnian coffee, burek, and local specialties
  • Explore the intersection of Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian architecture
