Laos: Sunrises & Street Food

Land in Vientiane, drop your bags at the hotel, and meet the rest of the crew in the evening. The first move is usually a walk through the bustling night market that runs along the Mekong River. Grab a local beer and follow your nose through the stalls for the best street food finds.

It's a morning departure for Vang Vieng, a three to four-hour drive north into a landscape of sharp limestone karsts and rice paddies. The town itself is small, set on the banks of the Song River, and serves as a base for exploring the surrounding nature.

After checking in, the plan is a guided nature walk through the forest to Kaeng Nyui waterfall. It's a chance for a swim in the pools before heading back to town. The evening is for grabbing dinner and checking out the local nightlife with the rest of the crew.

Vang Vieng is yours for the day. The classic move is to rent a bicycle and explore the surrounding countryside and its many caves on your own schedule. You can also book optional activities that usually include kayaking through Tham None cave or a trip out to the Blue Lagoon for a swim. Otherwise, just find a riverside spot, grab a drink, and watch the afternoon go by.

Trade Vang Vieng for the ancient capital of Luang Prabang, a quick trip on the high-speed train. After arriving, a short orientation walk around the city helps get your bearings in the UNESCO-listed old town.

The main event is the late-afternoon climb up Mount Phousi. The stone stairs lead past monks' quarters to Wat Phousi at the summit, offering a full panorama of the city and the Mekong River. It's the standard spot for sunset. Afterwards, head back down for a street food crawl through the night market.

If you're up before dawn, you can witness the daily alms-giving ceremony, where locals offer food to saffron-robed monks walking through the streets. It's a quiet, important local tradition that requires respectful observation.

Later in the morning, the group heads out on an excursion to the tiered Kuang Si waterfalls. You'll have time to swim in the turquoise pools and explore the jungle setting before heading back to Luang Prabang for a free afternoon and evening to explore on your own.

Today begins a two-day journey up the Mekong River on a traditional slow boat. It’s a full day on the water, watching river life pass by from the deck. The boat is spacious enough, with basic drinks available, so settle in for the long ride north.

Instead of a hotel, tonight is a homestay in a small village along the river. You'll have dinner with a local family and see a traditional Khamu cultural performance. It's a direct look into rural life far from the main tourist towns.

The second day on the Mekong continues the slow boat journey upstream. It's another 8-10 hours on the water, a good chance to read a book, chat with the crew, and watch the scenery change as you approach the Thai border.

The boat docks at Huay Xai, where you'll disembark and handle the formalities of crossing the border into Thailand. A short transfer gets you to the riverside town of Chiang Khong for the night. It's a travel day, pure and simple, ending in a new country.

It’s a long overland haul today, a six to seven-hour drive from the border at Chiang Khong south to Chiang Mai. You’ll watch the rolling hills of northern Thailand pass by from the window of the van.

Arrive in the city by late afternoon with time to settle in. The evening is free to explore on your own. Your best moves are visiting the famous night bazaar for some bargain hunting and street food, or maybe catching a local Muay Thai boxing match if that's your speed.
