This is the classic Cambodia-Vietnam backpacker circuit, but faster and with a built-in social scene. The route hits all the big checkpoints—Angkor Wat at sunrise, a few days of island life on Koh Rong, the buzz of Ho Chi Minh City, and the limestone karsts of Ha Long Bay. It’s a highlights reel, designed to stitch together the best of the region in just under three weeks, taking the headache out of booking the six different buses, two boats, and an overnight train you’d need to do it solo.

A 19-day route from Angkor's temples to Hanoi's Old Quarter, with a hard detour to the white-sand beaches of Koh Rong and a homestay in the Cambodian countryside.

What Coordinating This Route Involves

Putting this itinerary together yourself means coordinating 15 transport legs with 15 nights across 11 different properties. That's before you book the 17 included activities or figure out luggage storage on the two days with built-in transfer stops. The real puzzle isn't just sequencing the 565 km of travel, but guaranteeing you'll land with a solid crew your own age. An organised route delivers the built-in social scene—the part no amount of solo planning can replicate.

Siem Reap

Arrival in Siem Reap

Land in Siem Reap, grab your bag, and find your way to the guesthouse. You'll meet the rest of the crew tonight for drinks before the real adventure kicks off. Make sure you have your Vietnamese visa sorted before you arrive; you'll need it later.

Day 2 of 19

Siem Reap

Sunrise at Angkor Wat

It's an early start for a reason. You're heading out before dawn to watch the sun rise over the ancient temple of Angkor Wat. The morning is a blur of massive stone faces at Bayon and jungle-strangled ruins at Ta Prohm, the 'Tomb Raider' temple.

Lunch is a proper Khmer meal at a community-run restaurant. By night, the energy shifts to Pub Street, a chaotic strip of bars and market stalls. The move is to grab some street food and follow the music.

Siem Reap / Phnom Penh

Overland to the Capital

Settle in for a long overland haul. Today is a six- to seven-hour bus journey from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh, Cambodia's capital on the Mekong River. It's a classic Southeast Asia road trip day. Once you arrive, you'll take a quick walk to get your bearings before the evening is yours to explore.

DIY Reality Check: The overland journey from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh presents a classic coordination challenge, starting with the fact there is no central bus station in either city. A DIY traveler must first navigate to the correct departure point for one of the dozen-plus competing bus companies, each with its own office and varying reputation. Vetting these operators is a critical task; some companies have documented poor safety records in a country where road safety is a significant public health concern. Upon arrival in Phnom Penh, the bus will drop you at the company's private depot, not a central terminal, leaving you to arrange and negotiate onward transport to your final destination. A coordinated trip removes this entire chain of logistical friction, handling the operator vetting and door-to-door transport from your hotel in Siem Reap to your accommodation in the capital.
