Arrival and Night Out in Windhoek

Waterberg Plateau Hike

The road trip kicks off. The first stop is a community-run restaurant and shop just outside Windhoek to grab a packed lunch for the road. From there, it's a four to five-hour overland journey north to the Waterberg Plateau, a massive sandstone formation rising from the plains.

Once you arrive, you can stretch your legs on the park's trails, keeping an eye out for buffalo and giraffe among the trees, or just hit the campsite pool. The real hiking and wildlife spotting starts now.

Arrival in Swakopmund

Wake up in the middle of Spitzkoppe's otherworldly landscape. After a final look around, it's a relatively short three-hour drive west to the coast and the city of Swakopmund. The vibe shifts completely from desert wilderness to a town with German colonial architecture wedged between the Atlantic and the Namib Desert.

This is Namibia's adrenaline hub, and you'll have a couple of nights here to try things out. Drop your bags at the hostel and get the lay of the land; the real action starts tomorrow.

Adrenaline Day in Swakopmund

Today is all yours in Swakopmund. This is the place to get your adrenaline fix. You can go sandboarding on the dunes just outside of town, skydive over the point where the desert meets the sea, or take a scenic flight up the Skeleton Coast. Or, just hang out in town, grab a proper coffee, and wander through the German-influenced streets. It's your call—go big or just chill before hitting the road again.

Into the Namib Desert

The journey south is a six to seven-hour drive covering 300km, heading deep into the Namib Desert—the oldest desert on the planet. The scenery gets increasingly stark along the route. The base for the night is Bushman's Desert Camp, a remote campground right on the edge of the vast desert. Spend the afternoon on a desert walk to see how life survives out here. When night falls, the silence and the sheer number of stars are the main attractions. This is a proper wilderness experience.

Dune 45 and Sesriem Canyon

An early start is key to beat the desert heat. First up is Sesriem Canyon, a narrow gorge carved by water. It's a cool, shaded walk through the rock formations. The main event is the Sossusvlei area. You'll get the chance to climb Dune 45, a massive, star-shaped sand dune that offers incredible views over the sea of red sand. The climb is tough but short.

Afterwards, you can walk out to the iconic white clay pans of Deadvlei, dotted with ancient, skeletal trees. It's a full day of classic Namibian landscapes before heading back to camp for a braai (a South African barbecue).

Sunset at Fish River Canyon

This is a serious travel day, covering over 560km south. Settle in for a long haul in the truck; it's a good chance to nap or trade stories with the crew. The destination is worth the drive: Fish River Canyon, the largest canyon in Africa and second only to the Grand Canyon in size.

You'll arrive in time to get to the rim for sunset, watching the light change across the immense landscape. After the sun goes down, it's a short drive to the campsite for the night.

Orange River Crossing

A shorter drive today takes you to the Namibian border. After getting your passport stamped, you'll cross the Orange River and officially enter South Africa. The campsite for the night is right on the riverbank, a welcome green oasis after weeks in the desert.

The afternoon is for relaxing. Go for a swim in the river to wash off the desert dust, or if you're feeling active, you can opt for a canoe trip on the water. Otherwise, just kick back and enjoy the scenery.

Cederberg Wine & Rooibos

Continue south into South Africa's Western Cape. The drive takes you through the Cederberg region, a rugged mountain area that's also the heart of the country's rooibos tea production. The landscape is a mix of dramatic rock formations and agricultural land.

Tonight's campsite is nestled in the mountains. Once you're settled, there's an option for some local wine tasting, or you can just hit the pool before a final campfire with the crew. It's a chill evening before the final push to Cape Town.

Arrival in Cape Town

It's the last leg of the overland journey. On the way to Cape Town, you'll stop at the !Khwa ttu San Culture and Education Centre. It's a chance to learn about the history and culture of the region's first inhabitants directly from the community.

After the visit, it's back on the road for the final push into Cape Town, with Table Mountain coming into view as you approach the city. After more than a week of camping, you'll check into a dorm. Drop your bags and head out for one last night with the group.
