Colombia's Caribbean Coast: Cartagena, Minca & Tayrona

Arrive in Cartagena at any time. The walled old city is the obvious place to base yourself, with colonial-era hotels and guesthouses packed into its narrow streets. Drop your bags and head out for a first look at the plazas and the Caribbean sunset. The city's energy is immediate; it's best to just walk into it.

A half-day tour covers Cartagena’s key historical sites. Start with the Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas, the massive fortress overlooking the city, then head up to the Convento de la Popa for panoramic views. The afternoon is for exploring the walled city on your own terms. Get lost in the grid of streets between Plaza Bolivar and Santo Domingo Church, stopping for fried plantains. Note that hot water is a rarity in this part of Colombia; expect cold showers.

The route turns inland and uphill from Cartagena to Minca, a small town in the Sierra Nevada foothills. The overland journey takes most of the morning, trading the coastal heat for cooler mountain air. Once there, drop your bags and explore. The town is a hub for birdwatching and coffee plantations, but the main activity is simply finding a café by the river and settling into the slower pace.

From Minca, the road drops back towards the coast, heading for the area just outside Tayrona National Park. The day’s focus is a visit to the Katanzama community, home to the Arhuaco people. It’s an opportunity to learn about the region's indigenous cultures directly from local families and see a demonstration of traditional textile weaving.

Afterwards, it's a short drive to your lodging for the night, a simple posada near the park entrance. The afternoon is free to relax in a hammock and adjust to the coastal humidity before heading into the park itself tomorrow.

The day is dedicated to a hike inside Tayrona National Park. A local guide leads the way along jungle trails that connect a series of stunning Caribbean beaches. The hike is moderate, typically 3-4 hours, with plenty of stops to take in the scenery where the rainforest meets the sea. The park closes periodically (Feb, Jun, Oct, Nov) for ecological and spiritual restoration; check dates beforehand. The alternative is a visit to Taironaka Park for river tubing and a visit with the Kogi people. After the hike, it's a short ride back to your lodging to rest.

A free morning near Tayrona gives way to an afternoon drive to Santa Marta, a journey of about two hours. Santa Marta is a working port city with a different energy than Cartagena's polished tourism core. After settling in, a walk through the historic center helps get your bearings. The evening is best spent finding a spot for fresh seafood near the beach.

A full free day in Santa Marta. The city itself has a compact historic core worth exploring on foot. For a change of scenery, take a local bus or taxi to the nearby fishing village of Taganga, a backpacker hub known for its bay and access to snorkeling and dive spots. Otherwise, stick to the city, relax on the beach, and enjoy the Caribbean pace.
