Belize & Tikal: San Ignacio to Caye Caulker

Land in Belize City and transfer to the hotel. Use the remaining daylight to shake off the flight. Walk along the waterfront to catch the breeze off the Caribbean, or navigate the bustling streets of this gritty, historic port town before settling in for the night.

The journey west from Belize City begins with a three-to-four-hour local bus ride covering 130 kilometers to the frontier town of Benque Viejo del Carmen. After clearing customs at the Melchor de Mencos border crossing into Guatemala, begin the 100-kilometer overland journey. The landscape shifts as the road enters the dense, jungle-heavy Petén region, a stronghold of Mayan history. The destination is Flores, a colorful island town sitting on Lake Petén Itzá. The atmosphere here is distinctly Guatemalan, marked by Spanish-speaking streets and a slow lakeside pace. Settle into Hotel Petén and watch the sunset over the water.

Depart early for a one-hour overland journey to Tikal National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site buried deep in the Guatemalan rainforest. Spend three to four hours on foot exploring this massive archaeological complex, walking roughly seven kilometers through the jungle canopy. A local guide leads the way past towering limestone temples, plazas, and ancient public squares dating back to 600 BC. Keep an eye out for howler monkeys, coatimundis, and toucans in the branches above. The physical highlight is climbing Temple IV, where the emerald forest canopy pierces the sky. Return to Flores in the afternoon for a swim in Lake Petén Itzá.

Retrace the route back toward the Belizean border. A two-to-three-hour drive brings the journey to Melchor de Mencos to cross back into Belize. Once through customs at Benque Viejo del Carmen, a short 13-kilometer drive delivers travelers to San Ignacio, the hub of the rugged Cayo District. The afternoon is free to explore the town or head out to the nearby hilltop ruins of Xunantunich, accessed by a hand-cranked ferry across the Mopan River.

San Ignacio serves as the ultimate base camp for active exploration. Devote this free day to the region's subterranean wonders or ancient outposts. The premier option is the Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) cave, which requires swimming and wading to view skeletal remains and Mayan artifacts. Alternatively, explore the dry caverns of Barton Creek by canoe, hike the pine forests of Mountain Pine Ridge Reserve, or venture deep to the massive ruins of Caracol.

Trade the jungle for the sea. Board a local bus for a three-to-four-hour journey covering 123 kilometers back to Belize City. From the port, a one-hour water taxi ride crosses the turquoise waters to Caye Caulker, a low-key coral island where cars are banned and the pace drops to a crawl. In the afternoon, explore the sandy lanes on a two-hour guided bicycle ride. This ride is led by local guides from a youth development project, offering an authentic look at island life while supporting local vocational training for high school graduates.

Enjoy a completely unstructured day on Caye Caulker. The top draw here is the water: head out on a boat to the nearby Hol Chan Marine Reserve. Swim alongside nurse sharks, stingrays, and sea turtles in some of the healthiest coral gardens in the Caribbean. Back on land, grab a cold drink at the Split and watch the boats pass.

Spend another free day adapting to the island’s slow-motion rhythm. Rent a paddleboard to explore the mangroves, feast on grilled lobster at a beachside stand, or simply find a hammock under a coconut palm. There are no schedules to keep, allowing for complete absorption into the relaxed, salt-air lifestyle of the Belizean cayes.

Pack up and prepare for departure. Take a one-hour morning water taxi back to Belize City, followed by a 30-minute taxi ride to the airport. Outbound flights should be scheduled after 11:30 AM to allow plenty of transit time.
