Costa Rica: Osa Peninsula & Manuel Antonio

Arrive at San José's Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO). The day begins with a private overland journey out of the city and into the Central Highlands. The first stop is Irazú, Costa Rica's highest active volcano. A walk along the crater's edge reveals a stark, lunar landscape; on exceptionally clear days, it's possible to see both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts from the summit. The drive continues south, climbing into the Talamanca Mountains.

Access begins with a boat ride from Puerto Jimenez, a short trip across the gulf to the park's entrance station. From there, the route transitions to a full-day hike into the primary rainforest. The trails are often muddy and the air is thick with humidity, but the rewards are consistent wildlife sightings. This protected area is a stronghold for all four of Costa Rica's monkey species, as well as tapirs, sloths, and countless birds, including the scarlet macaw. After a deep immersion in this wild terrain, the return boat ride to Puerto Jimenez departs as the sun gets low, bringing you back to Hotel Botanika Osa Peninsula.

The route turns north today, following the Pacific coastline for the 256-kilometre, four-to-five-hour drive to Manuel Antonio. The journey is broken up midway with a stop at the Cristal Ballena hotel, which maintains a rainforest reserve. A walk along the Cristal Ballena trail offers a quiet alternative to the busy national parks, with opportunities to spot monkeys and coatis. After a rural lunch at the lodge, the drive continues. The day's destination is the Parador Nature Resort and Spa, a property set on a 12-acre peninsula just outside the town of Manuel Antonio, with views of the ocean.

The morning begins with an exploration of Manuel Antonio National Park. Though one of Costa Rica's smallest parks, it is famous for its accessible wildlife and scenic trails that weave between rainforest and white-sand beaches, offering opportunities to spot well-known residents like sloths, iguanas, and capuchin monkeys. The walk concludes at one of the park's protected beaches, ideal for a swim in the calm Pacific waters. The afternoon is free to relax back at Parador Nature Resort and Spa, or further explore the Manuel Antonio area. Dinner is served in the evening.
