Costa Rica: Osa Peninsula & Manuel Antonio — A Luxury Route
8-day itinerary
An 8-day route from San José into the country's wilder south, pairing the remote Osa Peninsula with a design-led wellness camp near Chirripó and the classic coastline of Manuel Antonio.
This route connects Costa Rica’s most biodiverse, and often logistically challenging, southern destinations. It’s designed for the traveler who wants to see the raw wilderness of the Osa Peninsula and Corcovado National Park without spending days arranging charters and remote lodging. The itinerary balances this deep nature immersion with a stay at a wellness-focused glamping property near Chirripó and finishes along the well-known Pacific beaches of Manuel Antonio, creating a circuit that is both wild and restorative.

Day 1 of 8
San José
Arrival in San José
Arrive at any time into San José's Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO). A private transfer will be waiting to take you to the Gran Hotel Costa Rica, a restored historic property directly on the Plaza de la Cultura. After settling in, the city's central sights are a short walk from the hotel's front door.

Private arrival transfer from the airport to the hotel.
Accommodation: Gran Hotel Costa Rica, Curio Collection by Hilton.
The evening begins with a welcome dinner at a nearby restaurant.
DIY Reality Check: Costa Rican immigration law requires all foreign visitors to have proof of onward travel, such as a return flight or a bus ticket to another country, before being allowed to enter. Airlines are known to enforce this rule strictly at check-in, and immigration officials will ask for this documentation upon arrival at the airport. Without a confirmed itinerary showing a departure from Costa Rica, travelers risk being denied boarding on their initial flight or being refused entry by immigration authorities after landing. A coordinated trip itinerary provides this proof of departure automatically, removing a key administrative hurdle that could otherwise derail a trip at the very first checkpoint.
The day begins with a private overland journey out of the city and into the Central Highlands. The first stop is Irazú, Costa Rica's highest active volcano. A walk along the crater's edge reveals a stark, lunar landscape; on exceptionally clear days, it's possible to see both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts from the summit. The drive continues south, climbing into the Talamanca Mountains.
The destination is Kinkara, a wellness-focused retreat at the foot of Mount Chirripó. Accommodation is in canvas glamping tents, and the property is designed around its organic garden and yoga shala. It’s a quiet, isolated place to connect with the high-altitude environment.

Mount Chirripó Area
Cloud Forest or Waterfall Yoga
The morning presents a choice. One option is a drive to the nearby Cloudbridge Nature Reserve for a guided hike through the cloud forest, a prime habitat for spotting regional bird species. The alternative is to stay closer to the retreat, with a hike to a local waterfall for a swim, followed by a yoga class back at Kinkara's shala.
Lunch is served at the retreat, featuring produce from its own garden. The afternoon is unscheduled, leaving time for the on-site wellness amenities, exploring the property's own trails, or simply resting before dinner.

DIY Reality Check: Accessing the Cloudbridge Nature Reserve is a significant logistical challenge for independent travelers. The reserve's own website warns that the final approach is a remote mountain road and explicitly recommends a 4x4 vehicle. Those who arrive in a standard car must park 1 kilometer away from the entrance, adding an extra walk to the day's hike. The alternative, using public transit from the nearest hub of San Isidro de El General, involves a multi-step journey with separate bus lines and terminals, and local schedules can be infrequent and confusing. A trip with coordinated 4x4 transport directly to the reserve's entrance bypasses this entire operational hurdle.
