Most of the Coast: Sydney to Cairns

Land in Sydney, grab your bags, and find your way to the hostel. Drop your stuff and meet the rest of the crew that evening. The first meeting point is usually the hostel bar, which gets lively after dark. If you land early, a walk through the historic 'The Rocks' district is a solid way to kill a few hours.

You've got a full free day to see Sydney on your own terms. The classic moves are a ferry ride across the harbour for that postcard view of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge, or a train out to Bondi Beach to see the scene. Your best bet is to pick one and do it well; trying to do everything is a recipe for a frantic day.

It's a travel day today. The morning starts with boarding a northbound train that traces the coast out of Sydney. It's a long ride, so grab a window seat and watch the city sprawl give way to coastal bushland. After pulling into Coffs Harbour, a short 30-minute transfer gets you to Arrawarra and the Spot X Surf Camp, your home for the next couple of nights. Settle in; the real trip starts here.

The day starts with a surf lesson right out front of the camp. The instructors will get you sorted with a board and a wetsuit before walking you through the basics on the sand. After a couple of hours in the water, the group heads out on a short walk into the coastal bushland to look for mobs of local kangaroos. The afternoon is yours to do as you please—nap in the sun, go for a swim, or explore the local rockpools.

Time to leave the surf camp behind and hit the road for Byron Bay. The drive takes a few hours, passing through small towns and rolling green hills before you arrive in the famous surf and arts town. Grab some lunch and then take the popular walk up to the Cape Byron Lighthouse. It's the easternmost point of the Australian mainland, and if you're lucky with the season, you might spot migrating whales or pods of dolphins from the lookout.

Today is all about soaking up the Byron vibe. You've got a full free day to do whatever you want. Hit the main beach, find a quieter stretch of sand, or rent a board and get in the water. If you're feeling more ambitious, you can look into optional sea kayaking trips or even skydiving. Otherwise, just wander the town's shops and find a good spot for a flat white.

Another travel day takes you north out of New South Wales and into Queensland. The destination is Brisbane, the state capital. Before you hit the city, the group makes a stop at the Daisy Hill Koala Centre, a conservation park where you can see rescue koalas in a natural-looking eucalyptus forest. After arriving in Brisbane and checking into the hostel, the plan is to head out and see what the city's nightlife is all about.

It’s an early start for the journey to K'gari, the world's largest sand island. Upon arrival, you'll be met by Traditional Owners of the land, the Butchulla people, for a welcome ceremony that sets the tone for the visit. From there, it's straight into a 4WD for an off-road adventure into the island's interior. The main stops are the stunningly clear, rainwater-fed Lake McKenzie for a swim and a walk through the ancient rainforest at Central Station. The day ends with stories around a campfire.

The second day on K'gari is all about the coast. You'll climb back into a 4WD to drive along the famous 75 Mile Beach, an official highway where the sand is the road. The drive is broken up by a stop at the rusting Maheno shipwreck, beached here since a 1935 cyclone, and a chance to swim in Eli Creek, a freshwater stream that carves a path through the dunes to the ocean. In the afternoon, you'll say goodbye to the island and head south to the beachside town of Noosa.

Today starts with a group hike in Noosa National Park. The trail follows the coastline, passing several viewpoints like Boiling Point and Dolphin Point before reaching the dramatic cliffs of Hell's Gate. Keep an eye on the treetops for koalas snoozing in the eucalyptus trees. The afternoon is free. Your best move is to grab lunch on bustling Hastings Street before finding a spot on the main beach to relax, or renting a board for a surf.

You have most of the day free for one last taste of Noosa. It's your final chance to hit the beach, do some souvenir shopping on Hastings Street, or just hang out at the hostel. In the afternoon, it's time to pack your bags and head to the train station. The next leg of the journey is a long one: an overnight train ride north. You'll fall asleep in Noosa and wake up near the Whitsundays. Get comfortable.

The train pulls into the station this morning, and from there it's a short bus ride to Airlie Beach, the main hub for the Whitsunday Islands. After dropping your bags at the hostel, the day is yours. Most people use the time to recover from the overnight journey by relaxing at the town's man-made lagoon, a popular spot for a swim without worrying about stingers. Or, just wander the main strip and get your bearings.

Get ready for a full day out on the water. You'll climb aboard a high-speed inflatable raft designed to get you around the islands quickly. The day is a mix of high-speed cruising across turquoise water and stops at key locations. You'll get to walk on the pure white silica sand of Whitehaven Beach, go for a short bushwalk to a lookout with incredible views over the islands, and jump overboard with a mask and snorkel to see the fringing coral reefs. It's a packed day.

This is a pure travel day, and it's a long one. After an early morning bus transfer from Airlie Beach to the train station, you'll settle in for a 10-hour rail journey north to Cairns. There's not much to do but watch the Queensland countryside roll by—endless fields of sugar cane, small towns, and coastal plains. It's a good day to charge your devices, catch up on a book, and rest up before the final stop of the trip.

It's the last full day of the trip, and you're in Cairns, the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. The day is free for you to book an optional activity. The most popular choice is a boat trip out to the reef for some snorkeling or diving. If you've had enough of the water, other options include skydiving or visiting the nearby rainforest. In the evening, the whole crew gets together for one final big night out to celebrate the end of the road.

The trip officially ends today in Cairns. Pack your bags, say your goodbyes, and head out whenever you're ready. There are no planned activities, leaving you free to catch a flight home or continue your travels on your own.
