What Coordinating This Route Involves

Pulling this route together solo means booking eleven nights of accommodation across six separate properties, plus nine transport legs and eleven different activities. The 265 km of travel isn’t the hard part; it's the constant admin of connecting all those pieces. While every bed and bus ticket is bookable, the one thing you can't reserve online is a small, built-in group of travel mates. A coordinated trip handles the logistics, but what it really delivers is the social scene, sorted from the moment you arrive.

The Route, Day by Day

Each leg of the journey mapped out — where the day takes you, what's actually on the ground, and things to consider when planning this tour.

Day 1 of 14

Rome, Italy

Arrival in Rome

Land in Rome, find your way to the hostel, and drop your bags. You can head out to explore on your own or just relax until the evening. The best way to get your bearings is the casual night walk, which usually ends with a stop for some proper Italian gelato.

  • Meet fellow travelers in the evening.
  • Get oriented with a guided night walk through the city.
  • Enjoy a complimentary gelato.
  • Tip: Book tickets for the Colosseum and Vatican well in advance.
  • Accommodation: Roma Scout Center (Hostel).
Day 2 of 14

Rome to Split

Overnight Ferry to Croatia

You have a free morning to tick off any last-minute Rome sights before the real travel day begins. The afternoon is an overland journey to the port city of Ancona on the Adriatic coast. From there, you'll board the overnight ferry to Split, Croatia, settling into a shared sleeping cabin for the crossing.

Day at a glance

  • Free morning for final explorations of Rome.
  • Overland journey from Rome to the port of Ancona.
  • Board an overnight ferry for the crossing to Split, Croatia.
  • Sleeping cabins are included for the journey.
  • Breakfast included.

DIY Reality Check: Stitching together the journey from Rome to Split requires coordinating at least two separate bookings: a 4-hour overland transfer to Ancona, and a ticket on one of the two main ferry operators for the overnight sea crossing. Those operators, Jadrolinija and SNAV, run on different and sometimes infrequent schedules, with combined sailings dropping to just a few per week outside of peak season. The 9-to-11-hour passage necessitates booking a sleeping cabin—an additional purchase that can sell out—to avoid an overnight trip in a deck chair. A trip that handles the entire transit chain, from a private vehicle in Rome to a pre-booked cabin on the ferry, removes these logistical hurdles.

Day 3 of 14

Split, Croatia

Ancient Split & Diocletian's Palace

You'll wake up on the Adriatic, arriving in Split after breakfast on the ferry. Once you've dropped your bags at the hostel, the day is about exploring Croatia's second-largest city. A guided walk takes you through the maze of the Old Town and into Diocletian's Palace, the sprawling Roman ruins that form the city's core. The evening is yours—grab drinks with new friends at the hostel or head out into town.
