Victoria Falls to Windhoek: The Okavango Delta & Kalahari

Arrive at any time into Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe—not to be confused with Livingstone, on the Zambian side. Most international flights land by early afternoon, leaving enough time to find your lodge, settle in, and get your bearings. The town itself is small and walkable, a good base for planning activities around the falls for the days ahead.

The first border crossing of the trip takes you from Zimbabwe into Botswana. The drive ends in Kasane, a small town on the banks of the Chobe River that serves as the main entry point for Chobe National Park. This region is dense with wildlife, particularly elephants. A sunset boat cruise on the river is the standard way to see them, along with hippos and crocodiles, before nightfall.

An early start is required for an optional game drive inside Chobe National Park, tracking wildlife as the sun comes up. Afterwards, the route pushes south on a 255km overland drive to the Nata area. The destination is a lodge built around a private watering hole, which draws a steady stream of elephants directly to the property. You can watch them from the pool or the bar.

Today is a long transit day, covering the 340km from Nata to Maun. This dusty town is the primary hub for accessing the Okavango Delta, and it functions as a final supply stop before heading into the bush. It's the last chance to pick up any personal items needed for the next two days of remote camping and exploration in the delta.

The journey into the Okavango Delta is a two-part process. First, a one-to-two-hour 4x4 drive across rough tracks leads to the water's edge. From there, you transfer into a mokoro, a traditional dugout canoe, for another hour or two of being poled through the reed-lined channels to a basic bush camp.

The afternoon is spent on guided wildlife walks, learning tracking and plant lore from the local polers who guide you through their home terrain. The day ends with a traditional Tswana song and dance performance by the camp staff.

After watching the sun rise over the delta, you'll retrace the route by mokoro and 4x4 back to Maun. The next leg is a long overland drive south to Ghanzi, a town on the fringes of the vast Kalahari Desert. Here, you'll join guides from the local San community for a bush walk. They demonstrate the survival skills—tracking, finding water, identifying edible plants—that have sustained their people in this arid landscape for millennia.

This is a full day of transit, covering 565km of arid landscape from Botswana into Namibia. The drive cuts west across the Kalahari, a long, straight push on tarmac that offers a powerful sense of the region's scale. The border crossing at Buitepos is a straightforward stamp-out, stamp-in affair. The day ends with arrival in Windhoek, Namibia's capital, a city with a distinctly German colonial feel, starkly different from the landscapes of the past week.

The route ends here in Windhoek. There are no planned activities, leaving the day free for any last-minute souvenir hunting or a final coffee in the city center before making your way to Hosea Kutako International Airport for your flight home.
