This is a route for the traveler looking beyond the standard Europe-Asia circuit. It connects three distinct regions—eastern Anatolia, the Georgian Caucasus, and Armenia—that are logistically difficult to link on a single independent trip. The itinerary prioritizes significant historical sites like Göbekli Tepe and Ani over big-city stops. It's a ground-level survey of ancient history and mountain landscapes, moving at a steady pace across a part of the world that hasn't been smoothed over for mass tourism.

A 20-day overland route from Istanbul to Yerevan, pushing east through Anatolia's ancient sites into the mountains of Georgia and Armenia. The path covers Göbekli Tepe, the ruins of Ani, and the monasteries of the Caucasus.

What Coordinating This Route Involves

The administrative weight of this route lies in its 36 transport legs, covering 3,659 km over 20 days. On 14 of those days, a key stop is threaded into a city-to-city transfer, a sequence that’s difficult to manage with standard bus or train schedules. An independent planner would need to coordinate those transfers with 19 nights of accommodation across 12 separate properties and 37 included activities. What an organized itinerary solves for is the intricate timing, turning what would be a series of logistical hurdles into a continuous line.

The Route, Day by Day

Each leg of the journey mapped out — where the day takes you, what's actually on the ground, and things to consider when planning this tour.

Day 1 of 20

Istanbul, Turkey

Arrival in Istanbul

Arrive in Istanbul at any time. The day is unstructured, providing time to check into a hotel and get oriented in historic districts like Sultanahmet or a more modern area like Karaköy. A walk around the neighborhood is a good way to start, perhaps finding a local spot for dinner.

Day 2 of 20

Adıyaman, Turkey

Sunset Over Mount Nemrut

A morning flight from Istanbul lands you in Adıyaman, the gateway to southeastern Turkey's ancient sites. The afternoon is a packed overland route, starting with lunch by the Atatürk Dam lake. From there, the road leads to the Karakus Tumulus, a 1st-century BC funerary monument for royal women, and the Roman-era Cendere bridge. The day culminates with an ascent of Mount Nemrut to watch the sunset over its famous collection of colossal stone heads, scattered remnants of a royal tomb. The drive back to Adıyaman for the night takes about 90km.

Day at a glance

  • Fly from Istanbul to Adıyaman.
  • Visit the Karakus Tumulus funerary monument.
  • See the ancient Cendere bridge.
  • Watch the sunset from the summit of Mount Nemrut.
  • Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.
  • Accommodation: White Star Hotel Adıyaman.

DIY Reality Check: Orchestrating this packed overland route as a day trip presents a significant logistical challenge. With no direct public transport to the summit, a DIY traveler must rent a car or hire a local driver. The drive from Adıyaman to the Mount Nemrut entrance covers roughly 80-90 kilometers of winding, steep mountain roads, taking at least 1.5 to 2 hours each way—before factoring in stops at Karakus and Cendere. The final leg involves a steep uphill walk to the summit terraces, which must be timed perfectly for sunset. The most significant hurdle is the return journey: a long drive back to Adıyaman on the same unlit, challenging mountain roads in complete darkness. A coordinated trip handles the complex transport chain and eliminates the daunting prospect of a late-night drive back from the remote summit.

Day 3 of 20

Şanlıurfa, Turkey

The World's Oldest Temple

The day begins with an overland drive towards Şanlıurfa, with a potential stop for views over the Atatürk Dam. The main event is Göbekli Tepe, an archaeological site that has rewritten human history. Dating back around 11,600 years, it's considered the world's oldest known temple complex. Explore the rings of massive, T-shaped limestone pillars, many carved with animal reliefs, before continuing the short distance to Şanlıurfa (often called Urfa) for the night. The rest of the day is free to explore the city's sacred pools and bustling bazaar.

Been to Şanlıurfa, Turkey, The World's Oldest Temple? Create an account and share your photos with other travelers planning this trip.

Day at a glance

  • Explore the Göbekli Tepe archaeological site.
  • Overland journey from Adıyaman to Şanlıurfa (approx. 80km total).
  • Free time to explore Şanlıurfa.
  • Included Meals: Breakfast.
  • Accommodation: Dedeman Şanlıurfa.

DIY Reality Check: While Göbekli Tepe is only 15 kilometers from Şanlıurfa, reaching it from Adıyaman as part of a multi-stop overland journey presents a significant coordination challenge. There is no direct public transport connecting Adıyaman to the archaeological site; a DIY traveler must first take a bus to the Şanlıurfa bus terminal (otogar), then arrange a separate taxi or a spot on a private shuttle for the final leg to the ruins. This multi-part transit chain requires careful timing and navigation of local transport hubs, all while managing luggage. A coordinated trip eliminates this logistical puzzle by using a single private vehicle for the entire door-to-door journey from the hotel in Adıyaman to Göbekli Tepe and onward to the next hotel in Şanlıurfa.
