Galápagos by Land: Quito, San Cristóbal & Santa Cruz

Arrive in Quito at any time. The city sits at 2,850m, so the first day is best spent acclimatizing to the altitude. After dropping your bags, a slow walk through the neighborhood is a good way to start. An optional city tour can cover the main sights, including a stop at the equator line, but there's plenty of time to explore later.

A morning flight from the mainland brings you to San Cristóbal, one of the oldest islands in the Galápagos archipelago. The main town here is Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, the provincial capital. The afternoon is free to get acquainted with the island's most famous residents. Head to Mann Beach to relax, swim, and watch the playful sea lions that haul out on the sand and rocks as frigatebirds circle overhead.

The day starts with a short boat ride to Isla Lobos, a small islet named for its large population of sea lions. The main event is snorkeling in the calm, protected waters, which offer a good chance to see sea turtles, rays, and the resident sea lion pups. The shoreline is a nesting site for frigatebirds and blue-footed boobies.

Back on San Cristóbal, the afternoon includes a visit to the Interpretation Centre to get context on the islands' volcanic origins, human history, and modern conservation. The rest of the day is free to return to the beach or explore the town.

A speedboat makes the 46km crossing from San Cristóbal to Santa Cruz Island. Upon arrival, the first stop is the island's lush highlands, a significant change in scenery from the arid coast. This is the natural habitat of Galápagos giant tortoises. A 2-3 hour excursion involves walking through the vegetation to find these massive reptiles grazing in the wild. It’s a quiet, uncrowded way to see them in their element before heading to the hotel in town.

Today's focus is on the water. A 2-3 hour sea kayaking trip explores the sheltered mangroves of Tortuga Bay. Paddling through the calm channels offers a chance to spot marine life from a different perspective—look for reef fish, rays, and sea turtles in the clear water. The bay is also home to a fine white-sand beach where marine iguanas often bask in the sun. The afternoon is open, with surfing lessons available for those looking to catch a wave.

A morning walk leads across Academy Bay and through a cactus forest to Las Grietas, a striking geological feature. This deep, narrow channel is filled with cool, clear brackish water, fed by both the ocean and a river—a perfect local swimming hole sheltered between two volcanic cliffs. Afterwards, there's time to relax at the nearby Playa de los Alemanes.

The afternoon is dedicated to conservation science with a visit to the Fausto Llerena Breeding Center and the adjacent Charles Darwin Research Station. Here, you can see Galápagos tortoises at every stage of life, from hatchlings in the nursery to full-grown adults, part of a crucial effort to restore their populations.

The return journey begins with an overland transfer across Santa Cruz Island to the airport on Baltra Island for the flight back to Quito. After landing and checking into the hotel, the rest of the day is free. It’s a final opportunity to explore the city's colonial architecture, find a restaurant for dinner, or pick up any last-minute souvenirs before the trip ends.

The trip concludes today. There are no planned activities, leaving the day free to pack and head to Mariscal Sucre International Airport for your departure flight at any time.
