The route crosses the Pont Neuf, which, despite its name, is the oldest standing bridge across the river, completed in 1607. The walk passes the Palais de la Cité, the first royal palace and later a prison for figures like Marie Antoinette during the Revolution. The afternoon is free for independent exploration; consider the museums of the Left Bank or a river cruise for an alternate perspective on the city's layout.

Monet's Garden and Normandy's Coast
Day 3 of 9The day involves a significant overland journey from Paris into Normandy. The first stop is Giverny, where painter Claude Monet lived from 1883 to 1926. His gardens, particularly the water garden with its Japanese bridge and lily ponds, were the direct subject of his most famous late-period works. The route continues to Honfleur, a 17th-century port where the Seine estuary meets the English Channel, for lunch and a walk through its well-preserved harbor.
The final leg of the journey leads to Bayeux. Before reaching the city, a stop at a traditional cider estate provides a look at the regional production of apple and pear ciders, Pommeau, and Calvados, with a tour of the orchards and cellars followed by a tasting.

The Beaches of D-Day
Day 4 of 9Today focuses on the history of the Normandy landings of June 6, 1944. A hands-on D-Day history experience allows for the handling of replica period equipment—from GI field jackets to the contents of a soldier's haversack—to provide a tactile sense of the era. Afterward, a vintage military vehicle provides transport to the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial at Colleville-sur-Mer, with a total travel time of approximately 3 to 3.5 hours. This was the first American cemetery established on European soil during World War II and contains the graves of 9,387 American military dead, most of whom were killed during the invasion. Accommodation is at the Churchill Hotel Bayeux.

The Tidal Fortress of Mont-Saint-Michel
Day 5 of 9An excursion leads to Mont-Saint-Michel, the fortified tidal island off the Normandy coast. A monastic community was founded here in the 8th century, and the strategic location made it a formidable defensive site throughout the Hundred Years' War. The island is accessible by a causeway, but historically its defense was aided by the fast-moving tides and surrounding quicksand. An orientation walk precedes free time to navigate the steep, narrow streets, climbing from the town at the base to the Romanesque-Gothic abbey at its peak before returning to Bayeux.

Troglodyte Caves of the Loire
Day 6 of 9Leaving Normandy, a long overland journey traces a route south to the Loire Valley. The region is known for its extensive network of tuffeau limestone caves, many of which were excavated and inhabited. A stop at the Rochemenier troglodyte village museum offers a preserved example of this lifestyle, which persisted in some areas into the early 20th century. The site includes two former farms and an underground chapel carved from the rock. The day concludes in the city of Blois, historically a royal residence situated on the banks of the Loire River.

Châteaux of the Loire
Day 7 of 9The day is spent exploring two major châteaux of the Loire. A canoeing excursion on the Cher River offers a unique water-level approach to the Château de Chenonceau. Its famous gallery, built on a series of arches spanning the river, was commissioned by Catherine de' Medici in the 16th century. In the afternoon, the focus shifts to the Château du Clos Lucé in Amboise. This was the final residence of Leonardo da Vinci, who lived here as a guest of King Francis I from 1516 until his death in 1519. The château and its grounds display models of his inventions.

The Palace of Versailles
Day 8 of 9The route returns towards Paris with a final major stop at the Palace of Versailles, the principal royal residence of France from 1682 until the start of the French Revolution in 1789. A guided tour focuses on the State Apartments, including the Hall of Mirrors, a grand baroque gallery that was the setting for the signing of the treaty that ended World War I. Time is also allotted for exploring a portion of the vast Gardens of Versailles, laid out by landscape architect André Le Nôtre. In the late afternoon, the journey concludes with the return to Paris.
