Madagascar: Ranomafana, Andasibe & the Southern Highlands

Head to Ivato International Airport for a domestic flight south to Tulear, followed by a 30-kilometre overland journey to the coastal outpost of Ifaty. The climate shifts instantly from highland chill to dry, seaside heat. Spend the afternoon scouting the sandy tracks of this fishing village along the Mozambique Channel. Drive 150 kilometres into the humid eastern rainforests to Ranomafana, a hillside village built around thermal hot springs. The nearby national park is one of Madagascar’s most critical biodiversity hotspots, home to rare golden bamboo lemurs. Set out on a forest hike along steep, often muddy trails under a dense canopy of ferns and orchids. The terrain requires sturdy boots and a steady pace. After navigating the damp forest paths in search of nocturnal geckos and rare birds, spend your afternoon relaxing in the village's public thermal baths or resting at your lodge.

Prepare for a long, scenic travel day as you cover 360 kilometres of winding highland roads to Antsirabe. The drive takes nine to ten hours, cutting through terraced rice paddies and pine-forested hills. To break up the journey, stop in Ambositra, the center of Madagascar's woodcarving industry. Spend an hour exploring the local workshops where Zafimaniry artisans carve intricate geometric patterns into rosewood and palisander. Grab lunch at a local eatery before continuing north to Antsirabe, a colonial-era town famous for its thermal springs, volcanic crater lakes, and colorful rickshaws. Arrive in the early evening as the highland air cools down.

Head into the surrounding highlands of Anjazafotsy for a day of walking through rural villages and terraced fields. You can choose between a 7-kilometre route with a 500-metre climb or a longer 9-kilometre path with 700 metres of elevation gain. The trail leads past clay brick homes and active rice paddies, offering an unvarnished look at daily agricultural life.
