Arrival in the City of Sails

Leave Auckland behind for a 275-kilometer overland journey south into the King Country. The primary stop is the Waitomo Caves, a 30-million-year-old subterranean limestone network. Here, board a flat-bottomed boat to drift in silence through the darkness of the Glowworm Grotto, where thousands of tiny creatures cling to the damp ceilings, emitting a soft, cold blue light. Back above ground, the route continues into the Volcanic Plateau, arriving in the lakeside town of Rotorua. The air here carries a distinct sulfur tang, a constant reminder of the active geothermal crust bubbling just beneath the surface.

Steam Vents and Maori Heritage

Spend the morning exploring Rotorua's volatile landscape. Walk through the steaming thermal parks to witness bubbling mud pools and active geysers, or opt for a whitewater rafting run down the nearby rivers. In the evening, head to the Mitai Maori Village. The experience introduces the migration history of the Te Arawa canoe to Aotearoa through traditional songs and dances. Watch a demonstration of the war canoe paddling down the Wai-o-Whiro stream, followed by a traditional hangi feast. This meal of chicken, lamb, and kumara is slow-cooked underground over white-hot stones, imparting a distinct smoky flavor.
