Arrival in Edinburgh

Arrive in Edinburgh at any time. Scotland's capital is compact and hilly, best explored on foot. Drop your bags and use the afternoon to get a feel for the city's layout before the main route begins tomorrow. An early arrival leaves enough time to walk the Royal Mile or climb Calton Hill for a clear view of the city's geography.

The Highlands & Cairngorms National Park

The day begins with a final look across Edinburgh before the four-hour overland journey north to Inverness. The 275km route cuts straight into the Highlands, breaking at Cairngorms National Park for a walk.

Inside the park, a short hike (2km) winds through Glenmore Forest, one of the last stands of ancient Caledonian Pinewood in Scotland. The trail ends at the sandy beach of Loch Morlich before the final push to Inverness, the hub of the Highlands, for the evening.

Culloden Moor & Loch Ness

The morning is spent at Culloden Moor, the battlefield where the 1745 Jacobite Rising ended. The visitor centre provides context, but the moor itself is the main draw. After lunch, the focus shifts to Loch Ness. A boat cruise offers the classic view from the water, running past the ruins of Urquhart Castle, a medieval fortress central to centuries of conflict during the Wars of Independence. The afternoon ends back in Inverness.
