This route connects three major South American stops—Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, and Iguassu Falls—in a tight, nine-day package. It solves the main logistical challenge of this corridor: the long-distance travel between cities. The itinerary uses a flight and an overnight bus to cover ground efficiently, preserving time for the destinations themselves. It’s a good fit for travelers who want the region's highlights without the friction of arranging complex, multi-stage transport, balancing big-city energy with time on the coast.

A nine-day route from the streets of Buenos Aires to Rio's beaches, stopping at the thundering Iguassu Falls and Brazil's colonial-era Costa Verde.

What Coordinating This Route Involves

Covering 1,827 km in nine days requires a tight schedule. An independent planner would need to link eight separate transport legs with stays at five different properties. That's before scheduling seven activities, one of which has to be timed into a transfer day between cities. The challenge isn't booking the individual pieces. It's the tight choreography of transport and timing required to make them connect without a lost day.

The Route, Day by Day

Each leg of the journey mapped out — where the day takes you, what's actually on the ground, and things to consider when planning this tour.

Day 1 of 9

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Arrival in Buenos Aires

Arrive at any time into Buenos Aires. The day is unstructured, leaving time to find your footing in the city. Drop your bags and head out to one of the capital's many sidewalk cafés for a coffee. It's a good opportunity to simply watch the city's rhythm before the trip begins in earnest.

  • Accommodation: Carsson Hotel (or similar).
  • Pre-trip nights are recommended to explore the city more fully.
Day 2 of 9

Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil

Iguassu Falls: The Brazilian Panorama

A morning flight from Buenos Aires lands in Puerto Iguazú, the gateway to the falls on the Argentine side. The first stop is the Jasy Pora Guaraní community in the Misiones rainforest for a visit guided by a local resident. From there, it's an overland journey of about an hour, including the border crossing into Brazil.

Once in Foz do Iguaçu, the day ends with a walk along the Brazilian side of the falls. This vantage point provides a sweeping, panoramic view of the 275 separate cataracts that form the main cascade, a useful orientation before exploring the Argentine trails up close.

Day 3 of 9

Puerto Iguazú, Argentina

Iguassu Falls: The Argentine Side

The day is dedicated to the Argentine side of the falls, which requires crossing the border from Brazil in the morning and back again in the evening. This side offers a more intimate encounter with the water, with a network of trails and catwalks built directly over the cascades. The main circuit leads to a viewing platform at the Garganta del Diablo, or Devil's Throat, the highest and most powerful section of the falls. Other trails wind through the forest, offering different perspectives. For a more direct view, boat trips run to the base of the falls.

Day at a glance

  • Walk the catwalks to the Garganta del Diablo (Devil's Throat).
  • Optional boat trip to the base of the falls.
  • Morning border crossing from Brazil to Argentina (1-1.5 hours).

DIY Reality Check: A day trip to the Argentine side requires two international border crossings, a significant logistical challenge for independent travelers. The public transit route involves stitching together a three-bus chain: one bus to Brazilian immigration (which doesn't wait), a second across the border to Argentinian immigration, and a third from the town of Puerto Iguazú to the park entrance. Once inside, access to the main Devil's Throat viewpoint is via an Ecological Jungle Train, which can become so crowded during peak seasons that visitors must reserve a time slot on a later train, introducing long waits. This is on top of potential hour-long queues just to purchase entry tickets during high season. A coordinated excursion with private transport eliminates the entire multi-part transit and border-crossing puzzle, while also handling park admission and internal logistics.
