Croatia's Dalmatian Coast: Zagreb to Dubrovnik

Arrive at any time in Zagreb, Croatia's inland capital. The city's core is a study in contrasts, with grand Austro-Hungarian architecture in the Lower Town (Donji Grad) giving way to the medieval cobblestone alleys and red-tiled roofs of the Upper Town (Gornji Grad). An initial orientation walk is the best way to get your bearings.

The day begins with an overland journey south to Plitviče Lakes National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The park protects a series of 16 terraced lakes connected by cascades and waterfalls. The journey continues into the hills to visit Brusje, a once-thriving shepherd's village now largely abandoned. The final stop is Malo Grablje, a ghost town deserted since the 1960s. Here, a traditional lunch is served at a family-run konoba, the only functioning business remaining among the stone ruins.

The journey continues south down the Dalmatian coast, beginning with a ferry crossing from Hvar back to the mainland. The primary stop is the town of Ston, located on the Pelješac peninsula. The town is renowned for two historical assets: its formidable 14th-century defensive walls, which stretch for over five kilometers, and its tradition of mariculture. The Bay of Mali Ston provides ideal conditions for farming the European flat oyster, a practice that dates back to Roman times. After a tasting of local oysters and wine, the overland route concludes in Dubrovnik, the powerful medieval maritime republic and a UNESCO World Heritage site.

A day trip heads south into the Konavle Valley, the fertile hinterland that has served as Dubrovnik's agricultural heartland for centuries. A visit to a family-run agrotourism estate provides insight into the region's rural traditions, including a walk through the gardens and a demonstration of traditional baking, followed by a lunch of local products. Back in Dubrovnik, the focus shifts to the 20th century at the Red History Museum, which offers a detailed perspective on daily life, culture, and politics during the Yugoslav socialist era.
