Mongolia: The Gobi, Orkhon Valley & Steppe Grasslands

From there, the route leads to the Nalaikh Ger Village for a lunch of traditional buuz (steamed dumplings) with a local family, offering a direct look at life in these traditional felt dwellings. The afternoon journey continues east to the Chinggis Khan Equestrian Statue, a 40-meter tall stainless steel monument rising from the plains. The journey covers significant distance across the Mongolian heartland, breaking for a simple lunch en route. Upon arrival at the ger camp in the late afternoon, there is time to settle in and absorb the expansive landscape before evening.

The day is an immersion into the yak-herding culture of the Orkhon Valley. It begins with an early morning visit to a local family to assist with milking their yaks. Afterward, a short excursion leads to the Orkhon Waterfall (Ulaan Tsutgalan), where the Ulaan River cascades over a 20-meter volcanic cliff. Following the visit, a hands-on cooking class back at camp focuses on making buuz, traditional Mongolian steamed dumplings. The afternoon is spent back with the herding family, learning to process the morning's milk into traditional products like suutei tsai (milk tea), cheese, and even a fermented yogurt spirit. The day concludes with a khorkhog, a traditional Mongolian barbecue where meat is slow-cooked with hot stones in a sealed container.

The journey continues to the historic city of Kharkhorin, adjacent to the ruins of Karakorum, the 13th-century capital of the Mongol Empire. Established by Genghis Khan in 1220, Karakorum was the political and commercial center of one of the largest contiguous empires in history. The first stop is Erdene Zuu Monastery, the earliest surviving Buddhist monastery in Mongolia, built in 1585 from the ruins of the old capital.
