A two-week circuit from San José through Costa Rica's key biomes, from the canals of Tortuguero on the Caribbean to the Pacific beaches of Manuel Antonio, with stops in the cloud forests of Monteverde.

This route is for the traveler interested in the ecological mechanics of Costa Rica, not just its scenery. The itinerary connects the country's key biodiversity corridors, from Tortuguero's turtle nesting grounds to Monteverde's high-altitude cloud forests. The focus is on direct engagement with local conservation science, including lectures at the Monteverde Institute and work with a sea turtle conservancy. It provides a structured, expert-led path through the country's most significant ecosystems, linking the Caribbean and Pacific coasts.

The Route, Day by Day

Each leg of the journey mapped out — where the day takes you, what's actually on the ground, and things to consider when planning this tour.

Day 1 of 14

San José

Arrival in the Central Valley

Arrive at Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) and make the transfer into Costa Rica's capital, San José. Depending on arrival time, the city's central plaza offers a good orientation point. It's a hub of local activity, often featuring street performers, musicians, and artisan booths, providing a brief introduction to Costa Rican urban life.

Day at a glance

  • Arrival transfer from the airport is provided.
  • Free time to explore San José's museums or central plaza.
  • Accommodation: Hotel Radisson San Jose.

DIY Reality Check: While San José's airport (SJO) has authorized taxi services, navigating ground transport upon arrival presents several tour-solvable friction points. Official airport taxis are orange, while city taxis are red; unofficial "pirate" taxis are also common and lack proper insurance or regulated meters. The Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ) has warned of scams where fraudulent drivers overcharge tourists, sometimes taking intentionally longer routes and demanding exorbitant fees up to $200. Furthermore, the U.S. Embassy has issued alerts regarding incidents on routes near the airport, including assailants throwing stones to force vehicles to stop for robbery. A pre-arranged arrival transfer eliminates the need to vet vehicles, negotiate fares, or worry about navigating unfamiliar and potentially hazardous routes after a long flight.

Day 2 of 14

Tortuguero National Park

Into the Canals of Tortuguero

The route from San José leads east, a four-to-five-hour overland drive across varied microclimates and through extensive pineapple and banana plantations to the Caribbean coast. At the port, the journey continues by motorized canoe, navigating the blackwater canals that define Tortuguero National Park. This tropical ecosystem, a critical nesting ground for green, loggerhead, hawksbill, and leatherback sea turtles, is a complex network of waterways and dense rainforest.

Practical note: if the Sea Turtle Conservancy is closed during the visit, the trip substitutes the Caño Palma Biological Station as the day's anchor activity. The first exploration by boat reveals a landscape teeming with birdlife and arboreal mammals, offering an immediate entry into one of the country's most significant protected areas. The remote jungle lodge is accessible only by water, fully integrating the stay with the surrounding environment.

Day 3 of 14

Tortuguero National Park

Jungle Ecology & Turtle Science

A second day in Tortuguero allows for more detailed ecological study. A morning boat tour navigates deeper into the canal system, a prime habitat for howler, spider, and capuchin monkeys, as well as sloths and a high diversity of avifauna. A guided walk on foot through the jungle trails surrounding the lodge provides a different perspective on the forest floor's flora and fauna, focusing on the delicate ecosystem of insects and amphibians.

The afternoon is dedicated to a visit with the Turtle Love Conservancy, a research organization studying sea turtle populations. The session focuses on the science of tracking long-term nesting data and how distant ocean conditions, food availability, and conservation policies impact local reproductive success.
