Morocco's Imperial Cities & Sahara — An Expert-Led Route
9-day itinerary
A nine-day overland route from Casablanca to Marrakech, tracing historic trade corridors through Fez, crossing the Atlas Mountains to the Saharan dunes at Merzouga, and concluding in the Djemaa el-Fna.
This route connects Morocco's key imperial cities with the Erg Chebbi dunes, but its distinction lies in small-group access to cultural specialists. The itinerary moves beyond standard medina tours to engage directly with local artisans and community projects, like the AFER women's association near Meknès. It prioritizes historical context, examining Roman ruins at Volubilis and the architectural evolution of Fez's *medersas*. This is a framework for travelers who value scholarly interpretation and direct cultural exchange over a faster-paced survey.

Day 1 of 9
Casablanca
Arrival in Casablanca
Arrive in Casablanca at any time. The formal itinerary begins on Day 2, so consider arriving a day early to explore the city's distinct blend of French colonial and traditional Moroccan architecture. Key sites include the monumental Hassan II Mosque and the city's historic Art Deco districts. Practical note for the optional pre-tour Hassan II Mosque visit: guided tours run Saturday-Thursday at 09:00, 10:00, 11:00, 12:00, and 15:00, and Fridays at 09:00, 10:00, and 15:00 — times shift seasonally, so confirm at the mosque before planning the day around them. Tickets sold on-site only.

Day 2 of 9
Casablanca to Fez
Roman Ruins and an Imperial Capital
The day begins with a long overland journey east, leaving the coast for Morocco's interior. The first major stop is Meknès, one of the four Imperial cities, whose monumental architecture is largely a legacy of the 17th-century Sultan Moulay Ismail. After exploring the city's historic gates and souks, the route continues to the Roman ruins of Volubilis.
This UNESCO World Heritage site, once a distant outpost of the Roman Empire, is notable for its remarkably preserved mosaic floors and standing columns. Lunch is at a women's cooperative that provides vocational training for rural women. The day concludes with an evening arrival in Fez after a full day of travel and exploration.

DIY Reality Check: Replicating this day's four-point journey requires stitching together a fragile chain of independent transport and services. While a train connects Casablanca and Meknès, the Roman ruins of Volubilis are not on the rail line, forcing a choice between renting a car or hiring a taxi for the 30km side trip and the final leg to Fez. Furthermore, Moroccan law strictly regulates the tourism sector; drivers are not legally permitted to act as guides at historical sites, and "false guides" are common. A traveler would need to separately source and vet a licensed vehicle, a licensed driver, and a government-certified guide for the day's sites, navigating a market where police actively check for correct permits. The lunch at the AFER Association is a community homestay program in the rural village of M'Haya, established through a partnership to fund local women's initiatives, not a public restaurant accessible to drop-in visitors. A trip that bundles vetted transport, certified guides, and pre-arranged community access removes these significant logistical hurdles.
A full day is dedicated to exploring the medina of Fez, a UNESCO World Heritage site founded in the 9th century and one of the world's largest living medieval cities. The narrow, winding alleyways are a dense matrix of sights and sounds, from donkey carts navigating the crowds to the vibrant colors of spice pyramids and painted ceramics. A local guide helps navigate the labyrinth, leading to key artisan quarters and historic sites.
A visit to a leather shop provides a balcony view over the famous Chouara Tannery, where workers treat and dye hides using centuries-old methods. The walk also includes the Madrasa al-Attarine, a superb example of Marinid-dynasty Islamic architecture, and a view of the Al-Karaouine Mosque, home to the world's oldest continually operating university.
