Arrival in the Himalayan Highlands

Arrive at Paro Airport, situated at 2,300 metres, where the descent offers immediate exposure to the thin, crisp Himalayan air. From Paro, begin a ninety-minute overland journey along the river valley to Thimphu, Bhutan's capital, to settle in and orient to the altitude.

Monastic Dialogues and the Divine Madman

Begin the morning in Thimphu with a scholarly introduction to Bhutanese Vajrayana Buddhism, discussing monastic life and spiritual philosophy with a resident monk. Afterward, the route climbs steeply through blue pine and cedar forests to the Dochula Pass at 3,050 metres, marked by its 108 memorial chortens and panoramic views of the eastern Himalayan peaks. Descending into the sub-tropical Punakha Valley, the landscape shifts to terraced rice paddies. In the afternoon, set out on a short walk across agricultural fields to Chimi Lhakhang, a 15th-century temple founded by the eccentric saint Drukpa Kunley, known historically as the "Divine Madman." The site remains an active pilgrimage destination, particularly for women seeking fertility blessings.

Fortresses and Hilltop Sanctuaries

Dedicate the day to exploring the architectural and political history of Punakha, the former winter capital. The primary focus is Punakha Dzong, a massive 17th-century fortress constructed by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal at the strategic confluence of the Pho Chhu (male) and Mo Chhu (female) rivers. This administrative and religious centre houses highly guarded relics and showcases classic Tibetan-influenced defensive architecture. Later, drive to the Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup Nunnery, a hilltop complex serving as a meditation and traditional arts training school for Buddhist nuns. Conclude with a hike through pine forests and terraced fields to the Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, a multi-tiered stupa built in 1999 to promote peace, offering commanding views of the upper Punakha Valley.
