Summer in Lapland: A Family Route from Helsinki to Rovaniemi

Arrive in Helsinki at any time. Most international flights land at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport (HEL), a straightforward train or bus ride from the city centre. Drop your bags and get your bearings with a walk through the central districts. A short local train ride from Helsinki leads to the Heureka Science Centre in Vantaa, a good half-day of hands-on exhibits. Back in the city by lunchtime, the afternoon can be spent on a walking tour of the city centre's main avenue, waterfront, and old town. The evening is for boarding the 'Santa Claus Express', the overnight train that makes the 824km run north to Rovaniemi, deep inside the Arctic Circle. Cabins are compact but comfortable for the long haul.

The train arrives in Rovaniemi, the capital of Finnish Lapland. From the station, it's a short drive to the official marker of the Arctic Circle and the adjacent Santa Claus Village. This is a purpose-built attraction where you can meet Santa, send postcards from his official post office, and browse souvenir shops. After a few hours here, the route continues overland to Ranua, a small municipality that serves as a base for exploring the region's forests and lakes. The rest of the day is for settling in.

The day is spent in the forests around Ranua. In the morning, visit a local kennel to meet sled dogs and learn about the life of a musher. The huskies are bred for work but are friendly and used to visitors. The afternoon is free. As the long summer evening sets in, a local guide leads a walk through the woods to learn about local flora and fauna under the midnight sun. The walk ends at a traditional Lappish hut for a campfire picnic of grilled sausages and sandwiches.

A full free day in Ranua to explore the Lappish wilderness on your own terms. The area is laced with trails and lakes, offering options for fishing, hiking, or renting a fat bike to explore the forest paths. For a classic Finnish experience, arrange for a session at a traditional wood-fired sauna. Otherwise, it's a day for rest before the journey back south.

After breakfast, a final transfer from Ranua brings you back to Rovaniemi. The trip concludes upon arrival at either the Rovaniemi train station for onward rail connections or the airport for flights home.
