Machu Picchu & the Galápagos Islands aboard the Yolita

Arrive in Lima at any time. Most international flights land by late afternoon, leaving enough time to clear customs and get settled. Drop your bags in a walkable, ocean-facing district like Miraflores or Barranco. Spend the rest of the day on foot, shaking off the flight and getting a feel for the city's rhythm before the early start tomorrow.

An early morning flight takes you from the coastal capital of Lima deep into the Andes, landing in Cusco at 3,400m (11,152 ft). The altitude is a serious consideration. The best plan for the afternoon is to take it easy, stay hydrated, and let your body adjust. A slow walk around the Plaza de Armas and the surrounding historic streets is more than enough activity for the first day at elevation.

The day is a full overland exploration of the Sacred Valley, a fertile river corridor that was the heartland of the Inca Empire. The route from Cusco drops down into the valley, stopping first at the Ccaccaccollo community to visit a women's weaving cooperative. After seeing traditional dyeing and weaving techniques, the road continues to Cuyo Chico for a pottery-making demonstration. Lunch is at a community-run restaurant in Huchuy Qosco before the final leg to Ollantaytambo. The afternoon is free to hike up to the granaries overlooking the town or wander the cobblestone streets.

From Ollantaytambo, board a train for the scenic journey deeper into the Urubamba River Valley. The tracks follow the river as the landscape grows more lush and tropical, ending at Aguas Calientes. This bustling town is pressed into a gorge at the foot of Machu Picchu and serves as the primary base for visiting the site. The afternoon is open to explore the town's market, hike to nearby waterfalls, or soak in the local hot springs in preparation for an early start tomorrow.

An early start is required to catch one of the first buses up the winding road to Machu Picchu. Arriving as the morning light hits the stone ruins is a classic Andean experience. A guided tour provides context for the citadel's temples, terraces, and residential areas, after which there is time to explore independently. The return journey is a multi-stage affair: a bus back down to Aguas Calientes, a train ride to Ollantaytambo, and finally, a 1.5-hour overland transfer back to Cusco for the night.

A full, unstructured day in Cusco offers a chance to explore at your own pace. You can dig deeper into the city's Incan and colonial history by visiting the Coricancha (Temple of the Sun) or the imposing Sacsayhuamán fortress just above town. Other options include hunting for souvenirs in the San Pedro Market or arranging a strenuous day-hike to the now-famous Rainbow Mountain, a full-day commitment.

Head to the airport for the flight back to Lima. The 1.5-hour journey returns you to sea level and the capital's sprawling metropolis. After checking into your hotel, the rest of the day is free. It’s a good opportunity to visit any sites missed on day one, explore the bohemian Barranco district, or simply enjoy a final Peruvian dinner.

A travel day connecting the two halves of the trip. An overland transfer takes you to Lima's airport for the flight north to Quito, Ecuador. Upon arrival at Mariscal Sucre International Airport, another transfer brings you into the city. After settling into your hotel, the evening is free to get your first taste of Ecuador's high-altitude capital.

An early morning flight from Quito crosses the equator to the Galápagos Islands, landing at Seymour Airport on Baltra Island. After a transfer to the docks, you'll board the expedition vessel that will be your base for the next week. The first excursion is to Bachas Beach on Santa Cruz Island. The white coral sand is a nesting site for sea turtles, while the shoreline is patrolled by bright red Sally Lightfoot crabs and marine iguanas. A nearby lagoon often hosts flamingos.

The ship repositions overnight to the northern island of Genovesa, a collapsed shield volcano that's a paradise for birdwatchers. The morning is spent at Darwin Bay, walking trails packed with frigatebirds and gulls. After a chance to snorkel along the caldera's inner walls, the afternoon's destination is El Barranco, also known as Prince Phillip's Steps. A steep path climbs the cliff face to a plateau that is a major breeding ground for red-footed and Nazca boobies.

The morning stop is Bartolomé, home to one of the most iconic landscapes in the Galápagos. A boardwalk path leads to the island's summit for a panoramic view of the surrounding islands and the distinctive spearhead of Pinnacle Rock. Afterwards, there's a chance to snorkel with Galápagos penguins and sea lions in the bay below. In the afternoon, cross to Sullivan Bay on nearby Santiago Island. Here, you can walk across a stark, ropey field of pahoehoe lava that is geologically very recent, a sharp contrast to the white coral beach at its edge.

Land at Puerto Villamil, the main settlement on Isabela, the largest island in the archipelago. The morning is dedicated to a 7km hike to the rim of the Sierra Negra Volcano. The trail leads across a lunar-like landscape of lava fields to the edge of the massive caldera, which spans 10km across. In the afternoon, a walk through the wetlands on the edge of town leads to the Arnaldo Tupiza Tortoise Breeding Centre, a conservation project established to protect and repatriate giant tortoises to the island.

Explore the western coast of Isabela Island, starting with a panga ride into Elizabeth Bay. These small motorized dinghies can navigate the shallow, protected mangroves where sea turtles, rays, and flightless cormorants are often found. Landings are not permitted here. The afternoon stop is Urbina Bay, at the base of the Alcedo Volcano. A 1954 geologic uplift raised a huge section of the marine floor by several meters, and a trail now crosses the dried coral reef. This area is also a good place to spot wild land tortoises.

The day begins at Tagus Cove on Isabela, a sheltered anchorage once used by pirates and whalers. A steep trail climbs to a viewpoint overlooking Darwin Lake, a saltwater crater lagoon. The cliffs are covered in graffiti left by sailors over the centuries. A short crossing of the Bolivar Channel leads to Punta Espinoza on Fernandina, the youngest and most volcanically active island. The landing site is on a raw, black lava flow, home to a massive colony of marine iguanas and a nursery for sea lions. Snorkelling here often involves swimming with feeding iguanas.

Start the day with a panga ride along the cliffs of Buccaneer Cove on Santiago Island, another historic pirate hideout, to observe nesting seabirds and sea lions. The afternoon landing is on Rábida Island, notable for its unique, deep-red sand beach, colored by the high iron content of the volcanic rock. A short trail leads inland to a saltwater lagoon where flamingos are sometimes seen. The snorkelling off the beach is excellent, with large schools of tropical fish and playful sea lions.

The final morning in the Galápagos involves a circumnavigation of Daphne Major, a small, conical tuff cone island. Landings are restricted for scientific research, but from the boat it's possible to observe the dense colonies of blue-footed boobies, frigatebirds, and Darwin's finches. Afterwards, the ship returns to Baltra Island. Disembark and transfer to the airport for the flight back to Quito. The final evening is free in the Ecuadorian capital.
