Arrival in the Bay of Kotor

Land in Montenegro, get yourself to Kotor, and drop your bags at the hostel inside the old town's walls. The first evening is low-key: meet the rest of the crew and head out for a walk through the medieval stone alleys. It's a good chance to get your bearings before the trip properly kicks off tomorrow.

Fortress Views and a Sunset Cruise

The classic Kotor photo requires some effort. A morning hike up the steep trail to the Fortress of San Giovanni delivers panoramic views over the terracotta roofs and the deep blue bay. It’s the best way to see the scale of the landscape. Head back down for lunch on your own time.

Later in the afternoon, you'll get out on the water for a sunset boat tour around the bay. The cruise passes several small islands and the historic town of Perast, offering a different perspective on the coastline before you head back to Kotor for the night.

Into the Mountains of Durmitor

Leave the Adriatic coast behind and head north into Montenegro's rugged interior. The overland journey includes a stop to stretch your legs at Nevidio canyon before continuing to Žabljak. This small mountain town is the gateway to Durmitor National Park, a region of pine forests and clear glacial lakes.

The afternoon is yours. You can rent a mountain bike and hit the park's trails, or just find a quiet spot to take in the scenery. The group gets back together for dinner in the evening.

Lakes, Monasteries, and the Budva Riviera

Start the day with a hike through Durmitor National Park to Crno Jezero, the 'Black Lake,' following a trail through the woods to its shore. After the hike, it's a long drive south back towards the coast. The main stop en route is the Ostrog Monastery, a 17th-century Orthodox pilgrimage site dramatically carved into a vertical cliff face.

Once you reach the coastal city of Budva, drop your bags at the hostel and head out for a walk through the medieval old town's labyrinth of alleys and squares. The rest of the evening is free to find dinner with the crew.

DIY Reality Check: Stitching together this day of mountain parks and cliffside monasteries is a significant logistical challenge for an independent traveler. Public transport is not a viable option; no single bus route connects Žabljak, Ostrog Monastery, and Budva in a way that allows for sightseeing. The only alternative is renting a car and tackling the 210km+ journey yourself. The main friction point is the monastery access road, a steep and narrow 9km climb with hairpin bends and sheer drops, often lacking guardrails. Much of the upper section is single-lane, requiring drivers to reverse into pull-outs for oncoming traffic. Upon arrival, the upper car park holds only 30-40 vehicles and fills quickly; the alternative is parking at the lower monastery and facing a steep 45-minute walk up to the main site. A coordinated trip with a private vehicle and professional driver eliminates the entire chain of logistical stress, from navigating treacherous roads to solving for limited parking.

Beach Day on the Budva Riviera

You have a full free day to do whatever you want in Budva. The city is famous for its beaches, so hitting the sand is the obvious move. You can also rent a stand-up paddleboard or kayak to get out on the water. For a bigger excursion, look for local operators running catamaran cruises to various swim spots and the Blue Cave. In the evening, head out with the group to check out the nightlife that makes Budva a popular summer spot.

Departure from Budva

Time to pack your bags and trade details with your new hostel mates. There are no scheduled activities, so you're free to depart at any time. If your flight is later, you've got time for one last coffee by the Adriatic or a final walk through the old town.
