This route is for anyone who wants to see Montenegro in under a week without the headache of figuring out bus schedules. It's a logical path: start on the coast in Kotor, cut inland to the mountains and Durmitor National Park, then loop back to the beach scene in Budva. You get the postcard views—like the Ostrog Monastery built into a cliff—and the medieval towns, but the pacing leaves plenty of room for group dinners, late nights, and free time to wander off with your new hostel mates.

A six-day loop through Montenegro's greatest hits. Start in the walled city of Kotor, head for the mountains near Žabljak, and finish on the coast with a few big nights out in Budva.

What Coordinating This Route Involves

Putting this route together yourself means juggling a surprising number of reservations for just six days. You’d be booking five nights of accommodation across three different properties, two separate transport legs, and researching and scheduling ten different activities, all while covering 210 km. The real trick isn't just getting the logistics to line up without a gap or an overlap. It’s that even with perfect planning, you can’t pre-book a built-in crew to travel with. A coordinated trip handles the sequencing, but more importantly, it solves the problem of finding your people.

The Route, Day by Day

Each leg of the journey mapped out — where the day takes you, what's actually on the ground, and things to consider when planning this tour.

Day 1 of 6

Kotor

Arrival in the Bay of Kotor

Land in Montenegro, get yourself to Kotor, and drop your bags at the hostel inside the old town's walls. The first evening is low-key: meet the rest of the crew and head out for a walk through the medieval stone alleys. It's a good chance to get your bearings before the trip properly kicks off tomorrow.

Kotor

Fortress Views and a Sunset Cruise

The classic Kotor photo requires some effort. A morning hike up the steep trail to the Fortress of San Giovanni delivers panoramic views over the terracotta roofs and the deep blue bay. It’s the best way to see the scale of the landscape. Head back down for lunch on your own time.

Later in the afternoon, you'll get out on the water for a sunset boat tour around the bay. The cruise passes several small islands and the historic town of Perast, offering a different perspective on the coastline before you head back to Kotor for the night.

Kotor to Žabljak

Into the Mountains of Durmitor

Leave the Adriatic coast behind and head north into Montenegro's rugged interior. The overland journey includes a stop to stretch your legs at Nevidio canyon before continuing to Žabljak. This small mountain town is the gateway to Durmitor National Park, a region of pine forests and clear glacial lakes.

The afternoon is yours. You can rent a mountain bike and hit the park's trails, or just find a quiet spot to take in the scenery. The group gets back together for dinner in the evening.
