This route is for the traveler who wants the full Morocco circuit—cities, desert, and coast—but doesn't have a month to DIY it. It stitches together the big highlights: the blue streets of Chefchaouen, the Fès medina, a camel trek into the Sahara, and even a surf stop in Taghazout. It's a fast-paced highlights reel, trading deep dives for a broad scope. The pace is quick, but it means you can see the country's full range in just over two weeks with a built-in crew for the ride.

A 17-day overland route covering Morocco's greatest hits. The path runs from Casablanca to the blue city of Chefchaouen, a night in a Sahara desert camp, and the Atlantic surf coast before landing in Marrakech's main square.

What Coordinating This Route Involves

Coordinating the 10 different property check-ins over 16 nights is the first layer of admin here. On top of that, you’re booking 11 separate transport legs and timing tickets for 15 different activities, all while trying to thread in a city stop on a travel day. Everything is bookable solo, of course. What an organised route really handles is the sequence—and it guarantees you’re not doing it alone, with a small group of travellers already assembled from the start.

The Route, Day by Day

Each leg of the journey mapped out — where the day takes you, what's actually on the ground, and things to consider when planning this tour.

Day 1 of 17

Casablanca

Arrival in Casablanca

Land in Casablanca, drop your bags at the hotel, and link up with the rest of the crew in the evening. The first night is usually a group thing, heading out to a local spot in the city center to get to know everyone. If you arrive early, the Hassan II Mosque is the main draw, but check opening and tour times before you go.

Day 2 of 17

Casablanca to Chefchaouen

The Road to the Blue City

The road trip starts today. It's an overland journey up the coast from Casablanca, with the first stop in Rabat, Morocco's capital. You'll have time to stretch your legs in the city's old quarter and see the views from the Kasbah des Oudaias before grabbing lunch.

From Rabat, it's another push onward to Chefchaouen, the famous 'blue city' tucked into the Rif Mountains. Once you arrive, a quick orientation walk helps you get your bearings in the blue-washed streets before you check in for the night.

Been to Casablanca to Chefchaouen, The Road to the Blue City? Create an account and share your photos with other travelers planning this trip.

Day at a glance

  • Overland journey from Casablanca to Chefchaouen (approx. 336km)
  • Stop in Rabat to explore the old quarter and Kasbah des Oudaias
  • Orientation walk in Chefchaouen's blue medina
  • Accommodation: Hotel Madrid Chefchaouen
  • Meals: Breakfast

DIY Reality Check: This 336-kilometer overland journey requires significant logistical planning. Public transport is not a straight shot; Morocco's rail network does not extend to Chefchaouen, forcing a multi-part trip combining a train with a bus or taxi. A direct bus from Casablanca takes roughly six hours, eliminating the stop in Rabat. For those driving, the main medina in Chefchaouen is largely car-free, and parking is limited to paid lots outside the city center, which can be tricky to navigate during peak season. The Kasbah des Oudaias in Rabat is also pedestrian-only, requiring drivers to find parking nearby before entering. Coordinating this multi-stage transfer with luggage, navigating toll roads, and finding parking adds a layer of complexity that a single, pre-arranged private vehicle completely removes.

Day 3 of 17

Chefchaouen

Free Day in Chefchaouen

A full free day to explore Chefchaouen. You can spend the hours getting lost in the blue alleys of the medina, shopping for souvenirs, or just finding a cafe to people-watch from. For something more active, there are hiking options in the surrounding Rif Mountains. A solid move for sunset is the short hike up to the Spanish Mosque, which has a panoramic view over the whole city.

Day at a glance

  • Full free day to explore Chefchaouen
  • Optional: Hike in the Rif Mountains
  • Optional: Sunset views from the Spanish Mosque
  • Accommodation: Hotel Madrid Chefchaouen
  • Meals: Breakfast

DIY Reality Check: While the optional Rif Mountains hike offers stunning scenery, arranging it independently presents significant operational hurdles. Moroccan law requires mountain guides to be officially licensed, a process involving extensive training and certification, and police may check for permits. For a DIY traveler, the challenge lies in sourcing and vetting a licensed professional from a market where unofficial "false guides" are common. This vetting is critical, as government travel advisories recommend using only official guides for travel in remote mountain areas. The region's reputation for cannabis cultivation also means that straying from established trails can lead to confrontational encounters, a risk a local guide knows how to avoid. Opting for a pre-organized hike with a vetted, licensed guide eliminates the risks of sourcing and the complexities of navigating the region safely.
