Nairobi to Cape Town: The East & Southern Africa Overland

Leave the shores of Lake Malawi and head west toward the Mwami border post. Cross from Malawi into Zambia and continue the 400-kilometre journey through rural Zambian landscapes. The destination is the central Mfuwe sector of South Luangwa National Park, one of Africa's premier wildlife sanctuaries. Set up camp at Croc Valley Camp, situated on the banks of the Luangwa River, where elephants and hippos are frequent visitors.

Cover 543 kilometres as you head south toward the Zimbabwean border. Cross the Zambezi River and enter Zimbabwe at the town of Victoria Falls, home to the world's largest falling sheet of water. Settle into the Explorers Village campsite, located within walking distance of the national park entrance. Spend the late afternoon catching your first glimpse of the massive plume of mist rising from the gorge.

Enjoy a full free day in Victoria Falls. Walk down to the national park to explore the rainforest paths along the edge of the gorge, or book an adrenaline-fueled activity like whitewater rafting on the Zambezi River, a scenic helicopter flight, or a bungee jump from the historic Victoria Falls Bridge.

Spend another day exploring this adventure hub. Visit the local craft markets, enjoy a sunset cruise on the upper Zambezi River to spot hippos and elephants, or relax at a café in town. The extra day allows you to pace your activities and fully experience the natural wonder of the falls.

Cross the border at Kazungula into Botswana, a short journey of about two hours. Arrive in the town of Kasane, the gateway to Chobe National Park. Drive 300 kilometres south toward Cape Town. Stop along the way at the !Khwa ttu San Culture and Education Centre to learn about the heritage, history, and modern lives of the San people. Continue the drive as the iconic silhouette of Table Mountain comes into view. Arrive in Cape Town and check into your accommodation.
