The Route, Day by Day
Each leg of the journey mapped out — where the day takes you, what's actually on the ground, and things to consider when planning this tour.
Arrival in Lisbon & Alfama Taverns
Arrive in Lisbon, where a private car handles the transfer from the airport. Settle into the hotel before heading out for the evening. The first night is a walking introduction to the city's culinary landscape, winding through the historic neighborhoods to find local taverns and shops away from the main tourist thoroughfares.

- Private airport transfer on arrival in Lisbon.
- Evening food and wine tour through two of Lisbon's neighborhoods.
- Accommodation: Hotel Dos Reis Lisbon.
- Dinner included.
DIY Reality Check: Finding authentic food in Lisbon's oldest quarter, Alfama, requires navigating a maze of steep, cobbled alleys and staircases that were laid out before maps made sense. The neighborhood is notorious for tourist traps, especially in high-traffic areas, where restaurants charge premium prices for mediocre food. A DIY food crawl means vetting small, family-run *tascas* from a sea of options—many of which are cash-only or require reservations booked well in advance, particularly in high season. A guided walk with a local specialist bypasses the guesswork, stitching together pre-vetted, authentic taverns and shops that are often hidden from the main tourist thoroughfares.
Coastal Hike at Cabo da Roca
The morning begins with a drive to Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of continental Europe. From here, a 4km coastal trail traces the cliff edge, passing the viewpoints of Pedra de Alvidrar and Buraco do Fojo before descending to the stone arches and caves of Praia da Adraga. The terrain is technical in places, with steep sections requiring proper footwear. After the hike, the afternoon is spent exploring the botanical gardens and romanticist architecture of Palácio Monserrate in Sintra. The evening is free to explore Lisbon at your own pace.

Overland to the Spanish Border
Leave the capital behind for a four-hour overland journey east into the Beira Baixa province, toward the Spanish border. The destination is Idanha-a-Velha, one of Portugal’s designated historic villages, where you'll stop for lunch at a local restaurant. A moderate 3km walk follows, tracing a path through the countryside to a notable Ichnofossil site. The day ends with a short drive to the quiet rural town of Medelim, and the hotel that serves as the base for the next two nights.

Day at a glance
- Private overland journey from Lisbon to the countryside (approx. 4 hours).
- Explore the historic village of Idanha-a-Velha.
- Hike a 3km trail to the Ichnofossils site.
- Accommodation: Casa Do Cedro.
- Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included.
DIY Reality Check: Reaching the remote historic village of Idanha-a-Velha from Lisbon via public transport is a multi-stage affair, as no direct train or bus service exists. The journey requires at least one transfer, typically starting with a 3-hour train or bus to the district capital of Castelo Branco. From there, a traveler must navigate a second leg via infrequent local buses or a taxi to reach the village itself. Stitching together this transit chain makes it extremely difficult for an independent traveler to also complete a hike at the Penha Garcia fossil site and transfer to separate accommodations in Medelim all in one day. A trip that handles the entire overland transit with a single, private vehicle bypasses this complex and time-consuming logistical puzzle.
