This is a classic, efficient route through Portugal's urban core, linking Lisbon, Coimbra, and Porto in a single week. The itinerary is built for a first-time visitor who wants the main cultural touchstones without the logistical overhead of booking inter-city trains and hotels. It's a fast-paced survey, moving from Lisbon's coastal hills to the university town of Coimbra, and finishing in Porto. The trade-off for the pace is breadth over depth, covering the essential ground between the country's two largest cities.

A 7-day overland route from the capital, Lisbon, north to Porto, with a stop in the university city of Coimbra and a visit to a port wine cellar on the Douro.

The Route, Day by Day

Each leg of the journey mapped out — where the day takes you, what's actually on the ground, and things to consider when planning this tour.

Day 1 of 7

Lisbon

Arrival in Lisbon

Arrive in Lisbon at any time. The city's core is a straightforward transfer from the airport. If you land early, consider a run out to the Belém district to see the Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower before the crowds descend. Just note that most of the area’s major sites are closed on Mondays.

Day 2 of 7

Lisbon

Fado and Foothills

A morning walk through the city helps get your bearings, sorting out the main squares and landmarks. The rest of the day is open. You can use the time to take a day trip into the foothills to Sintra, with its pastel houses and palaces, or dig deeper into Lisbon's own neighborhoods. The day ends in one of Lisbon’s oldest districts for a traditional Portuguese dinner set to the sound of a live *fado* performance.

Day 3 of 7

Lisbon to Coimbra

North to Coimbra via Batalha

The route pushes north from Lisbon, breaking the overland journey in the small town of Batalha. The main draw here is the Monastery of Batalha, a massive Gothic structure built to commemorate a 14th-century Portuguese victory over the Castilians. There's time to walk the grounds and take in the scale of the UNESCO site before continuing on to Coimbra, the medieval capital of Portugal.

Day at a glance

  • Overland journey from Lisbon to Coimbra.
  • Visit the Monastery of Batalha, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
  • Free time to explore the monastery and its grounds.
  • Accommodation: Hotel Astoria Coimbra (or similar).
  • Meals: Breakfast

DIY Reality Check: Replicating this overland journey by public transit involves a multi-part bus itinerary, as there is no direct train service to Batalha. While the Lisbon-to-Batalha leg is a straightforward two-hour bus ride, the onward journey to Coimbra is not direct and requires a transfer in the nearby city of Leiria. The most significant friction for a DIY traveler, however, is managing luggage. With no apparent public luggage storage at the Batalha bus terminal or monastery, travelers must either carry their bags during the visit or find an informal solution. A coordinated private transfer eliminates the entire logistical chain of managing bus schedules, transfers, and luggage.
