Arrival in the Capital

Arrive in Taipei at any time. Getting from Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) to the city center is straightforward via metro or bus. After settling into your hotel, the first evening is best spent on an orientation walk through your neighborhood to get your bearings and find a local spot for dinner.

Temples, Monuments, and Skyline Views

A full day exploring Taipei begins by navigating the city’s efficient metro system. A logical route connects several key sites: start at the intricate Longshan Temple, one of the city's oldest places of worship. From there, it's a short ride to the immense Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, a landmark of modern Taiwanese history. The morning culminates with a short, steep hike up Elephant Mountain (Xiangshan) for its classic view of the Taipei 101 skyscraper. The afternoon is open for independent exploration—perhaps diving into the city's food scene or visiting one of its many museums.

High-Speed Rail to an Indigenous Heart

The day begins with a high-speed train south to Taichung, trading Taipei's urban density for the mountains. From Taichung, an overland drive of about 78km leads into the central highlands and to the Shuanglong Bunun Village. Here, you can connect with the local indigenous community, participating in a traditional name-giving ceremony and learning about their culture. A short hike leads to the Shuanglong Rainbow Suspension Bridge, the highest in Taiwan, with views over the Shuanglong Waterfalls. After lunch in the village, the journey continues with a short drive to Sun Moon Lake, arriving in the evening.

Circumnavigating Sun Moon Lake

A full day is dedicated to Sun Moon Lake, with no fixed schedule. The most popular activity is cycling the path that circles the lake, which is widely regarded as one of the world's most scenic bike routes. Renting a bike is easy from the shops in Shuishe Village. Alternatively, you could take a boat tour across the water to visit Lalu Island and the Xuanzang Temple, or visit a local tea plantation to learn about the region's famous Assam black tea.

Taiwan's Ancient Capital, Tainan

Leaving the central mountains behind, the day involves a 170km overland journey south to Tainan, Taiwan's oldest city and its former capital. After arriving and finding lunch, the afternoon is spent exploring the Anping District on foot. A walking tour covers the area's key historical sites, including the atmospheric Anping Old Street, the surreal Anping Tree House—a warehouse completely engulfed by banyan tree roots—and the 17th-century Fort Zeelandia, a remnant of the Dutch colonial presence on the island. The evening is free to explore Tainan's celebrated night markets.

DIY Reality Check: The 170-kilometer journey from Sun Moon Lake to Tainan is a classic example of multi-stage transit friction. For an independent traveler, the trip requires at least two, and often three, separate modes of transport. There is no direct train or single bus service. The most common route involves taking a bus from Sun Moon Lake to the Taichung High-Speed Rail (HSR) station, a journey of about 90 minutes. From there, a separate HSR train is needed to reach Tainan's HSR station. However, Tainan's HSR station is located far outside the city center, requiring a third leg via local train, bus, or taxi to reach the downtown area and Anping District. This entire sequence can take over three hours, not including wait times or navigation between stations with luggage. A coordinated trip in a private vehicle eliminates this entire chain of transfers, ticket purchases, and station navigation.

Pagodas and Buddhas of Kaohsiung

A short 50km drive south leads to Kaohsiung, Taiwan's main port city. The first stop is the expansive Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum, a major Buddhist complex dominated by a 108-meter golden Buddha statue. After exploring the grounds, the route continues to Lotus Pond, a man-made lake famous for its collection of temples and pavilions. Here, the main attractions are the vividly colored Dragon and Tiger Pagodas, which you enter through the dragon's mouth and exit through the tiger's for good luck. The nearby Spring and Autumn Pavilions are also worth a look before the afternoon is left free to explore Kaohsiung's coastal districts.

DIY Reality Check: While the distance between Tainan and Kaohsiung is short, the operational logistics for a day visitor are not. An independent traveler must first get to Kaohsiung's Zuoying station, find luggage storage, and then contend with the infrequent public buses to the Fo Guang Shan monastery; queues can be long, with waits of up to an hour for the next departure. From the monastery, there is no direct route to Lotus Pond, forcing a return trip back to Zuoying station to transfer. This multi-stage journey with backtracking is further complicated by sourcing reliable information on the Dragon and Tiger Pagodas, which only fully reopened in 2025/2026 after years of extensive renovations. A coordinated trip in a private vehicle eliminates the entire inefficient transit chain, luggage concerns, and the risk of arriving at a site with outdated information.

Return to the Capital

The journey turns north again, this time on a 2-to-2.5-hour high-speed train ride from Kaohsiung back to Taipei. After checking into the hotel and dropping off luggage, the rest of the day is free. This is a good opportunity to revisit a favorite spot or explore something new. Consider seeking out one of the city's famous beef noodle soup shops, visiting the National Palace Museum, or exploring the shopping districts of Ximending or Xinyi.

Northern Coast: Jiufen & Keelung

A full-day excursion explores Taiwan's rugged northern coast. The first leg is a 35km drive to the old gold-mining town of Jiufen, stopping en route at the Golden Waterfall and the Yin Yang Sea viewpoint. Jiufen itself is a maze of narrow, lantern-lit alleyways clinging to a steep hillside, filled with traditional teahouses and food stalls. From there, the route continues 15km to the port city of Keelung. The focus here is Heping Island, a coastal park known for its surreal, wind-eroded rock formations. The day trip concludes with a visit to the bustling Keelung Night Market to sample local specialties before the return drive to Taipei.

DIY Reality Check: An independent traveler attempting this four-stop coastal loop faces a complex transit puzzle involving at least four separate public transport legs. The journey requires a train from Taipei to Ruifang, a transfer to a bus for Jiufen, another bus (like the 788) to Keelung, and then a final city bus (the 101 or 102) to reach Heping Island Park. The alternative, self-driving, presents its own friction, as parking in Jiufen is notoriously scarce, with lots near the old street often full by mid-morning on weekends. Even the Golden Waterfall viewpoint has extremely limited space for cars. A coordinated trip in a private vehicle eliminates this entire inefficient chain of transfers, timetables, and parking searches.

Departure from Taipei

The trip concludes today in Taipei. There are no planned activities, leaving the morning free for any last-minute souvenir shopping or a final walk through the city before heading to Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) for departure.
