Tanzania: Chimp Trekking & Serengeti Safari

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, the primary gateway to Tanzania's northern safari circuit. The 54-kilometre drive to the Arusha Serena Hotel, Resort & Spa takes approximately one and a quarter hours, leading to a property set among gardens on the shores of Lake Duluti. The day is for settling in and acclimatizing to the elevation and pace of East Africa before the safari begins.

The morning begins with a two-to-three-hour, 130-kilometre overland drive in a 4x4 safari vehicle to Mto wa Mbu, a bustling town where communities from across Tanzania intersect. The first stop is a cooking demonstration led by local women, followed by a walk through the town's market and residential areas to understand its unique cultural mix. After a traditional lunch of meat and plantains, the journey continues for another hour or two (60 kilometres), ascending to the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater.

The afternoon is spent on a first game drive, descending to the crater floor. This vast, self-contained ecosystem is dense with wildlife. The search begins for the resident populations of black rhino, elephant, zebra, and prides of lion that patrol the grasslands. As dusk approaches, the drive concludes at a camp situated on the crater's edge.

Today offers a rare opportunity to explore the Ngorongoro Conservation Area on foot. There are two hiking options on Mount Makarot, a peak on the crater's western wall. The more demanding route is a challenging ascent to the summit, rewarded with what are arguably the finest panoramic views over the Ngorongoro plains and the crater itself. A second, more moderate trail contours along the mountain's flank, offering a gentler climb with views across the highlands toward Lake Eyasi.

Both hikes offer a perspective on the sheer scale of the landscape that is impossible to grasp from a vehicle. The afternoon is at leisure back at camp, a well-earned rest before dinner and a final night overlooking the caldera.

The 3.5-hour drive from Ngorongoro to the Serengeti is a game drive in itself through a changing landscape. After descending from the highlands, the route enters the vast, open plains of the southern Serengeti, an area synonymous with the Great Migration. The drive continues northwest through the park's core, tracking wildlife along the way.

A picnic lunch is served in a quiet spot within the park, breaking up the day's drive. The destination is a lodge in the western corridor, positioned for its views over the plains. The day is a slow, steady immersion into one of the world's most significant wildlife sanctuaries, ending with an evening watching the sun set over the savanna.

A full day is dedicated to exploring the Serengeti's immense grasslands. With millions of wildebeest and zebra moving through the ecosystem annually, followed by predators, the park's dynamics are constantly shifting. The day is structured around morning and afternoon game drives, maximizing the chances of significant sightings during the cooler hours when animals are most active.

The search is for the classic 'Big Five,' but also for the subtle interactions: a cheetah scanning from a termite mound, a herd of elephants at a waterhole, or giraffes moving through acacia woodland. Lunch is another picnic taken out on the plains, ensuring a full day of immersion in the wild without the need to return to the lodge.

The journey to Gombe Stream National Park is a multi-stage transit to one of Africa's most remote primate research sites. It begins with a charter flight from the Seronera Airstrip (SEU) in the Serengeti to Kigoma (TKQ), a port town on the shore of Lake Tanganyika. From Kigoma, a boat transfer makes the two-hour journey north along the coast to Gombe Stream National Park. The park, accessible only by water, is a thin strip of forest on the lake's eastern shore. The destination is Mbali Mbali Gombe Lodge, set on the beachfront. This property serves as the base for exploring the area made famous by Dr. Jane Goodall's work. The day concludes at the lodge with dinner served overlooking the water, offering a quiet evening on the lake's edge.

The day centers on tracking the chimpanzees of Gombe Stream National Park. The trek begins from the Kasekela research area, heading directly into the steep, forested valleys of the park. This hike is strenuous, following rough trails while listening for calls and looking for signs of chimpanzee movements. Once a family group is located, park regulations permit a single hour of observation time. This is a quiet, profound encounter, watching the complex social interactions of our closest living relatives in their natural habitat. The afternoon brings free time to relax at Mbali Mbali Gombe Lodge, swim in the clear waters of Lake Tanganyika, or simply absorb the experience from the lakeshore.

The morning offers a chance to explore the historical side of Gombe. A hike leads up to Jane's Peak, the viewpoint where Dr. Goodall made key observations, offering a commanding view over the forest canopy. A visit to her original, humble research house provides context for the groundbreaking work that began here. If needed, the park permit allows for an optional second, early-morning chimp trek. By late morning, the return journey begins with a boat transfer from Gombe back across the lake to Kigoma, a 20-kilometre journey. From there, a flight connects to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania's coastal metropolis. Upon arrival, make your way to the Hotel Slipway, a waterfront property on the Msasani Peninsula, for the final leg of the trip.

The final full day is for rest and recovery by the Indian Ocean. The Msasani Peninsula offers a relaxed pace compared to the city center. There are no scheduled activities, leaving the day open. One option is to take a local boat out to Bongoyo Island Marine Reserve, a small, uninhabited island with quiet beaches and a simple trail. Alternatively, spend the day at the hotel, explore the local shops, or relax by the water. In the evening, a final farewell dinner is held at a seaside restaurant.
