Tanzania: Wildlife of the Serengeti & Ngorongoro Crater
6-day itinerary
A six-day safari loop from Arusha through Tanzania's northern parks. The route covers the Serengeti plains, the Ngorongoro Crater floor, and the elephant herds of Tarangire National Park, with stays in lodges instead of tents.
This is a compact, efficient route through Tanzania's essential northern parks. It's designed for travelers who want the classic safari circuit—Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire—without committing to a longer trip or the complexities of self-driving. The pacing is quick, moving every day or two to maximize wildlife viewing across different ecosystems, from Tarangire's baobabs to the Serengeti's open plains. By using lodges instead of campsites, it keeps the focus on the game drives while providing a comfortable base each night. It's a pragmatic approach to a world-class wildlife circuit.

Arusha
Arrival in Arusha
Arrive at any time into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), the main gateway for Tanzania's northern safari circuit. A short transfer brings you to Arusha, a city spread out in the shadow of Mount Meru. The day is for settling in and adjusting to the climate — the only fixed item is an evening welcome meeting with the CEO at the joining hotel before the week's overland travel begins.

DIY Reality Check: Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) has no official taxi rank, no meters, no posted rates, and no app-based ride-hailing services like Uber or Bolt are available. Upon exiting customs, travelers are met by drivers with whom they must negotiate a fare directly. This immediate vetting and negotiation process takes place in a country where the U.S. Department of State warns that violent crime is common. General advice for the region is to never use unlicensed taxis and to only use pre-booked services from a reputable company. Having a vetted driver and vehicle pre-arranged for arrival removes this entire logistical and security calculation.
The first leg of the safari circuit is a 114km drive south to Tarangire National Park. Known for its massive elephant herds and ancient baobab trees, the park is a quieter alternative to the more famous reserves. An afternoon safari drive follows the Tarangire River, the main water source that draws wildlife during the dry season. After a picnic lunch inside the park, the route continues another 107km to the highlands town of Karatu for the night.

Coffee Farms of Karatu
The morning in Karatu is unscheduled. It's a chance to rest or take an optional side trip for a safari drive in nearby Lake Manyara National Park, famous for its birdlife. In the afternoon, the focus shifts to the local economy with a visit to a coffee farm. Here, local farmers walk through the entire process, from harvesting the coffee cherries to husking, drying, and roasting the beans, ending with a fresh cup.
