Tanzania: Wildlife of the Serengeti & Ngorongoro Crater

Arrive at any time into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), the main gateway for Tanzania's northern safari circuit. A short transfer from the airport brings you to Arusha, a city spread out in the shadow of Mount Meru. Check in at the Comfort Eland Hotel and spend the rest of the day settling in and adjusting to the climate. This is a straightforward arrival day designed for acclimatization before the overland travel begins.

The first leg of the safari circuit is a 114km drive south to Tarangire National Park. Known for its massive elephant herds and ancient baobab trees, the park is a quieter alternative to the more famous reserves. An afternoon safari drive follows the Tarangire River, the main water source that draws wildlife during the dry season. After a picnic lunch inside the park, the route continues another 107km to the highlands town of Karatu for the night.

The morning in Karatu is unscheduled. It's a chance to rest or take an optional side trip for a safari drive in nearby Lake Manyara National Park, famous for its birdlife. In the afternoon, the focus shifts to the local economy with a visit to a coffee farm. Here, local farmers walk through the entire process, from harvesting the coffee cherries to husking, drying, and roasting the beans, ending with a fresh cup.

An early start is required for the drive to the Ngorongoro (a 17-kilometre transfer from Karatu) Conservation Area. The road leads down into the Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera, for a morning safari drive. This self-contained ecosystem offers a high concentration of wildlife, including the 'Big Five'. After a picnic lunch on the crater floor, the journey continues west for 86km, entering Serengeti National Park through the Naabi Hill Gate for an evening safari drive en route to a camp in the park's interior.

A full day is dedicated to exploring the vast grasslands of the Serengeti. An optional, pre-dawn hot-air balloon ride offers a different perspective on the plains. Otherwise, the day is spent on a long safari drive, tracking animal movements and taking in the scale of the landscape. The park is famous for the Great Migration, but its resident populations of big cats, buffalo, and elephants are a constant. A picnic lunch is taken in the bush before returning to camp in the evening.

After a final breakfast in the Serengeti, the long drive back to Arusha begins. The 278km overland journey breaks at Mto wa Mbu, a multicultural town where over 120 different ethnic groups live. A walk through the community and a traditional lunch provide a look at local life off the safari circuit. The route ends in Arusha in the late afternoon. Any onward flights should be scheduled for 9 PM or later.
