Tanzania to Zanzibar: White Sands & the Wilderness

Land in Arusha, get to the hotel, and drop your bags. The first night is about meeting the rest of the crew. The plan is usually a local bar for a few Tuskers—a good chance to trade travel stories and figure out the plan for the days ahead.

This is the start of the classic safari. The morning involves packing into 4x4s and heading out of Arusha towards the Serengeti. It’s a long drive, but the scenery shifts from town to the vast, acacia-dotted plains you've seen in photos. Once inside the park, the roof of the truck pops up for the first wildlife drive.

The goal is to spot the big stuff—elephants, lions, buffalo—as you make your way to the campsite for the night. The excursion is a full three-day, two-night affair inside the park and the Ngorongoro area, so settle in.

It's an early start for one last morning safari drive through the Serengeti. The light is better and the animals are more active before the day heats up. Afterwards, you'll break down camp and drive towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The main event here is the view from the crater rim—a massive, wildlife-filled caldera stretching out below.

The campsite is near the rim, so you'll set up in the late afternoon. It gets cold at this altitude, so you'll want to have extra layers ready for the evening.

Another early start to descend 600 metres to the Ngorongoro Crater floor for the final safari drive. The crater is a self-contained ecosystem, with grasslands, swamps, and forests packed into a relatively small area, making wildlife sightings frequent. You'll likely see zebra, gazelles, hippos, and maybe even the elusive black rhino.

By late morning, it's time to drive out of the crater and begin the journey back to Arusha. The route includes a stop in the town of Mto wa Mbu for a walk and a traditional lunch before you get back to the hotel in the evening.

This is a pure travel day, and a long one. You'll leave Arusha early for the 10-hour drive towards the Indian Ocean coast. If the weather is clear, you might get a view of Mount Kilimanjaro from the road. The scenery changes from the highlands to the tropical coast as you get closer to Bagamoyo, a historic port town. This is just an overnight stop to break up the journey before heading to Dar es Salaam and the Zanzibar ferry the next day. There's an option to skip the drive and fly directly to Zanzibar, if you'd rather have more time on the island.

After the long haul yesterday, today is about the final push to the island. A two-hour drive gets you from Bagamoyo to the ferry terminal in Dar es Salaam. From there, it's a boat ride across to Zanzibar, the so-called "Spice Island." You'll land in Stone Town, a historic trade hub with a maze of narrow streets. After checking into the hotel, there's a quick orientation walk to get your bearings, but the rest of the afternoon is free. This is a good time to just wander and get lost in the alleyways before the beach portion of the trip begins.

The morning is for exploring Stone Town properly. It's a UNESCO World Heritage site, a tangle of alleyways, bazaars, and massive carved wooden doors. You can spend hours just wandering, grabbing coffee from a street vendor, and checking out the local shops selling spices and textiles. In the afternoon, the group heads across the island to Jambiani, a village on the quieter, more relaxed east coast. This is where the beach part of the trip kicks in, swapping the city's energy for white sand and turquoise water.

A full day to do whatever you want on the coast. The tide goes out a long way here, revealing seaweed farms and tidal pools. You can organize a snorkeling or diving trip, hire a traditional dhow sailing boat, or just find a spot on the beach and do nothing. The village itself is low-key, with a few beach bars and restaurants. It's a day to fully settle into the slow pace of island life before heading home.

One last drive across the island from Jambiani back to Stone Town. The trip officially wraps up here in the late morning, giving you time for any last-minute souvenir shopping before heading to the airport or your next destination.
