India's High Deserts & Markets: Delhi to Goa

Land in Delhi, grab your bag, and find your way to the hotel. The first night is low-key: meet the rest of the crew and then maybe head out into the electric chaos of a night market like Karol Bagh for your first taste of India. The real travel starts on day two, so if you want to see Delhi properly, you'll need to fly in a day or two early.

It's an early start for the morning train to Agra. Find a window seat and watch the North Indian plains roll by for a few hours. Once you arrive, it's straight to the main event: the Taj Mahal. A guide will walk you through the grounds and give you the history, but the real point is just to see the white marble mausoleum for yourself. If you’ve still got energy, the less-famous but still impressive Agra Fort is worth a look.

The day starts with a short orientation walk through Agra before catching a train onward to Jaipur — Indian rail is its own adventure, expect chai vendors and platform chaos. Jaipur is known as the 'Pink City' for its sandstone-colored buildings, and it's a full-on sensory experience. Get your bearings with a walk through the market streets, maybe hopping on a cycle rickshaw to cover more ground. For your free time, you could check out the City Palace or do something completely different and catch a Bollywood movie at the massive Raj Mandir Cinema.

The morning is dedicated to the Amber Fort, a massive sandstone fortress perched on a hill overlooking Maota Lake. A guide will lead you through the maze of courtyards, halls, and palaces, pointing out the intricate details you might otherwise miss. The afternoon is yours. Head back into Jaipur and explore with others from the group, or find a quiet corner for yourself. The city is big enough for both.

Leave the city chaos behind for the quiet rural village of Tordi Sāgar. A walk through the village is the plan, stopping in to see local potters and cobblers at work. You might even get roped into a game of cricket with some locals. Lunch is a traditional meal, giving you a real taste of village life. Later, you can opt for a jeep safari or a camel cart ride out to the sand dunes for sunset, which is usually the best move.

Today's drive takes you over Snake Mountain to Pushkar, a famous pilgrimage town wrapped around a holy lake. It's the site of the world's only major temple to Brahma, the Hindu god of creation, so it has a distinct spiritual energy. After checking in, a three-kilometre orientation walk loops through the city's colourful ghats, temples, and winding streets. It's a good place to just wander and watch.

It's a pre-dawn start to hike up to the Savitri Temple, perched on a hilltop overlooking the town. The goal is to watch the sunrise over the Thar Desert with a cup of chai in hand. It's worth the early alarm. The rest of the day is free. You can find a quiet café, take a yoga class, or browse the endless market stalls. For the evening, there's an option to head out into the desert for a traditional dinner cooked by cameleers, complete with local music.

Settle in for a long travel day as you head south by train to Udaipur. Known as the 'Venice of the East,' this city is famous for its interconnected lakes and regal, white-marble palaces. It feels a world away from the desert towns. Once you arrive and drop your bags, a quick orientation walk will show you the lay of the land. A boat ride on Lake Pichola as the sun goes down is a popular first-night move for the crew.

You have a full free day in Udaipur. This is your chance to explore on your own terms. You can get lost in the narrow lanes, visit the massive City Palace complex that looms over the lake, or find a rooftop cafe and just watch the world go by. It's also a great place for shopping, with tons of artisan workshops and paintings in the local style. Or do nothing at all—that's a valid choice too.

A second free day in Udaipur gives you time to do everything you didn't get to yesterday. Maybe you'll check out the Monsoon Palace for sunset views, take a boat to the Jagmandir island palace, or just revisit your favorite spot from yesterday. This is a good day to break off into smaller groups and tackle different things, then meet up later to trade stories over dinner.

Time to move on. A five- or six-hour local bus ride takes you to Ahmedabad, a city that's more about business than tourism but holds a key piece of Indian history. The main stop here is the Gandhi Ashram at Sabarmati, the quiet, riverside compound from which Gandhi orchestrated India's independence movement for over a decade. It’s a peaceful and thought-provoking place to spend an afternoon before you continue your journey south.

Wake up early to catch the train to Mumbai, a solid eight-hour ride that drops you right into the heart of India's biggest, fastest, and most cinematic city. The change in energy is immediate. After checking in, the evening is yours. You could people-watch on Chowpatty Beach, grab a cup of tea at the famous Taj Hotel, or dive into the chaos of Crawford Market. The city's nightlife is legendary, so you can easily find a place to go out with the crew.

You have one last day to explore Mumbai. A popular option is to take the ferry out to the Elephanta Caves, a network of temples carved out of a rocky island in the harbour. Or, just continue wandering through the city's distinct neighborhoods. In the evening, the group meets up to board the overnight train to Goa. Find your bunk, settle in, and try to get some sleep as the train rattles its way down the coast.

Wake up on the train as it pulls into Goa, India's famous tropical beach state. The vibe here is pure relaxation. The day is completely free for you to hit the beach, find a sunbed at a beach bar, and sip on something cold. This is the wind-down part of the trip. Explore the local markets, eat as much fresh seafood as you can, and get ready for a final big night out with the group to celebrate the end of the journey.

It's the final day. There are no activities planned, so you're free to pack your bags and head to the airport whenever you need to. Time to say goodbye to the crew and start planning the next adventure.
