Uganda to Rwanda: Gorilla Treks & Safari Drives

Arrive in Kampala. The city is a sprawling, high-energy hub spread across several hills. Settle into your hotel or shake off the flight with a walk through the central streets. If arriving early, a day trip east to Jinja for whitewater rafting on the Nile is a viable option, though it requires an early start.

The journey west from Kampala to Fort Portal covers roughly 297 kilometers, taking between four and six hours. The route transitions from urban chaos to the green, rolling tea plantations of western Uganda, set against the backdrop of the Rwenzori Mountains. Arrive at a guest farm on the outskirts of Fort Portal, near the edge of Kibale National Park. The afternoon is yours to settle into a furnished tent, listen to the resident monkeys and birds, and adjust to the slower pace of the countryside. It is a straightforward overland transit that sets the stage for the rainforest treks ahead.

Enter the moist evergreen canopy of Kibale National Park for a morning or afternoon chimpanzee trek. Led by park rangers, the hike through the dense undergrowth can be humid and physically demanding as you track the vocalizations of resident chimp families. Sightings are common but require patience and quiet movement. Afterward, head to the nearby village of Bigodi for a traditional buffet-style lunch featuring organic local ingredients served in a thatched hut. Spend the rest of the day exploring the Bigodi Wetlands Sanctuary on a guided boardwalk trail, a prime spot for sighting primates like the red colobus and various bird species.

Travel south from Kibale to Queen Elizabeth National Park, a 115-kilometer drive that crosses the equator. The landscape shifts dramatically from dense rainforest to open savannah, crater lakes, and swamp networks. In the afternoon, set out on your first wildlife drive through the park's northern sector. Keep watch for elephants, buffalo, warthogs, and Uganda kobs across the plains. The park is characterized by open savannah and the extensive Maramagambo Forest. End the day at a camp perched on a hill bordering the park, offering panoramic views of Lake George and the surrounding grasslands.

Start with an early morning game drive when predators are most active. This is your best chance to spot lions, leopards, and hyenas before the heat of the day drives them into the shade. After a midday break and lunch inside the park, you have the option to take an evening boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel. This natural waterway connects Lake Edward and Lake George, and is packed with hippos, Nile crocodiles, and herds of elephants cooling off along the muddy banks. Return to camp as the sun sets over the savannah.

The drive south to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a scenic five-to-six-hour journey covering 200 kilometers. The flat savannah gives way to steep, terraced hillsides, deep valleys, and mist-shrouded volcanic peaks. This is a classic East African highland drive, offering glimpses of local village life along the winding roadside. Arrive at your camp on the edge of the ancient, dense rainforest, where the air is noticeably cooler and crisper. Settle in, check your hiking boots, and prepare your gear for tomorrow's demanding trek. The camp sits on a hillside looking out over the forest canopy and the valleys below.

Wake early for the trek into Bwindi's dense, tangled interior. After a safety and etiquette briefing at the park headquarters, set off with local rangers to track one of the habituated gorilla families. Depending on permit allocation, tracking starts from Rushaga, Buhoma, Nkuringo, or Ruhija. The hike can last anywhere from one to six hours, navigating steep, muddy slopes, thick vines, and stinging nettles. Once found, you are permitted exactly one hour to quietly observe these primates in their natural habitat. It is a physically grueling but deeply rewarding encounter. Return to camp for a free afternoon to rest.

Cross the border into Rwanda at the Gatuna Border Post and travel to Kigali. Pay a sobering visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, a vital site for understanding the country's modern history. Conclude with lunch at the Nyamirambo Women's Centre before departing.
