Viva Mexico: Ancient Ruins & the Mayan Riviera

A two-week route from the sprawl of Mexico City to the beaches of Tulum, cutting south through Oaxaca's food scene and the jungles of Chiapas. Expect ancient ruins, long bus rides, and late nights.

This is the classic Mexico backpacker trail packed into two weeks. The route covers serious ground, from the high-altitude chaos of Mexico City down through Oaxaca’s markets, the mountains of Chiapas, and out to the Caribbean coast. It’s a fast pace, with a few overnight bus journeys to connect the dots. This trip is for anyone who wants the social energy of a hostel common room on wheels, prioritizing a ready-made crew and a packed itinerary over slow travel. You’ll see the highlights, but you won't be lingering.

The Route, Day by Day

Each leg of the journey mapped out — where the day takes you, what's actually on the ground, and things to consider when planning this tour.

Day 1 of 14

Mexico City

Arrival in Mexico City

Land in Mexico City, get yourself to the hotel, and drop your bags. The first official move is meeting the rest of the crew in the evening. It's a low-key start, mostly about getting settled and figuring out who you'll be traveling with before the real action kicks off tomorrow. Note: the welcome activity on this tour is a social meet-up that's only available on the 18-to-Thirtysomethings tour series, so the group skews toward that demographic.

Day 2 of 14

Mexico City

Street Food & City Neighborhoods

The day starts with a walking tour through the city's greener, more bohemian neighborhoods, La Condesa and Roma. It's a good way to get your bearings, walking past cafes and bars while sampling street food like chilaquiles and tacos along the way. The walk ends near the enormous Bosque de Chapultepec, leaving the afternoon open. Your best move is to organize a trip out to the massive pyramids at Teotihuacán, a separate journey from the city center.

DIY Reality Check: Navigating Mexico City's street food scene presents a classic traveler's dilemma: the best food is on the street, but so is the risk. Official travel advisories recommend strict precautions, from avoiding uncooked vegetables to ensuring food is served hot. For a DIY traveler, this translates into a daunting vetting checklist for every taco stand: Is it crowded enough to ensure high turnover? Is the station clean? Does the same person handle money and food? Is the salsa freshly made? This operational calculus can be exhausting, often leading tourists to miss out on the experience altogether. Having a local guide who has already vetted the best and safest vendors removes this entire burden of risk and analysis.

Oaxaca

Overland to Oaxaca

It's a full-on travel day, heading south on a long-haul bus for six or seven hours to Oaxaca. Once you arrive and check in, the plan is to get straight out into the city's vibrant streets. An orientation walk passing the Santo Domingo Cultural Centre takes you to the main square and the 20 de Noviembre market, the perfect place to try a *tlayuda*—a massive toasted tortilla loaded with beans, meat, and cheese. The day wraps up with a visit to a local chocolate-making shop before you're cut loose for the night.

  • Taste a traditional Oaxacan tlayuda

DIY Reality Check: The overland journey from Mexico City to Oaxaca introduces a classic DIY travel challenge: navigating Mexico's complex and layered first-class bus system. For a solo traveler, the process begins with identifying the correct terminal in Mexico City—a megacity with several—as buses to Oaxaca primarily depart from the Terminal de Autobuses de Pasajeros de Oriente (TAPO). From there, one must choose between multiple service levels, from the premium ADO Platino or GL (Gran Lujo) to the standard First Class or the more basic AU (Autobuses Unidos). While government advisories from the UK recommend using first-class buses on toll roads due to a lower incidence of crime, this requires vetting specific companies and routes. A coordinated trip handles the entire logistical chain—from terminal and carrier selection to ticketing and transfers—bypassing the operational burden of a multi-hour overland transit.
