BC's Coast Mountains: Juan de Fuca, Squamish & Whistler

Arrival & Ferry to Vancouver Island

Arrive in Vancouver and meet the coast. The day's main transit is the ferry from the mainland to Vancouver Island, a scenic crossing of the Strait of Georgia that lands near Victoria. From there, it's an overland journey to the Sooke area, where the first camp is established. The afternoon allows for a preliminary hike in East Sooke Regional Park, a network of trails cutting through lush Pacific rainforest to a dramatic, rocky coastline.

DIY Reality Check: The journey from Vancouver to Sooke requires a DIY traveler to coordinate at least three separate logistical legs. First, vehicle reservations for the BC Ferries crossing from the mainland are strongly recommended to avoid long sailing waits, and popular sailings can sell out well in advance. Second, upon arrival on Vancouver Island, reaching Sooke via public transit is not direct; the trip takes nearly three hours and requires multiple bus transfers. Finally, this all must align with securing a spot at a specific private campground in Sooke. A coordinated trip in a private vehicle handles the entire door-to-door transit chain, including the ferry crossing and final drive to the pre-arranged campsite.

Juan de Fuca Trail Section

Today is a full-day, eight-hour trek along a section of the rugged Juan de Fuca Marine Trail. The route is a classic West Coast challenge, traversing dense coastal forest, slick pebble beaches, and crossing gullies on suspension bridges. Expect significant mud and uneven terrain; the trail is physically demanding with constant, rolling elevation changes. The payoff is direct exposure to the wild Pacific coastline, with views of crashing surf and sea stacks between forest sections.

Sooke & Surrounds

A day for recovery or further exploration based out of Sooke. With no scheduled hikes, the day is open. Options include renting a sea kayak to paddle the protected waters of the Sooke Basin, joining a local whale watching tour out on the strait, or renting a bicycle to explore the Galloping Goose Regional Trail. For a change of pace, the city of Victoria is accessible for a day trip via public transit.

Island Traverse & Sea to Sky Highway

A major transit day connecting Vancouver Island to the mainland's Coast Mountains. The morning begins with a 2.5-hour drive north to Cowichan Bay for a sea kayaking excursion in a sheltered inlet. From there, the route continues to Nanaimo to board a ferry back to the mainland, docking at Horseshoe Bay. The final leg is the spectacular 65km drive up the Sea to Sky Highway to Squamish, a global hub for climbing and mountain sports, where the next camp is set up.

The Stawamus Chief

Today's objective is the Stawamus Chief, one of North America's largest granite monoliths. The trail is notoriously steep, gaining elevation rapidly through forest via a seemingly endless series of wooden staircases. Higher up, the route involves short, exposed sections of scrambling with the aid of fixed chains and ladders to access one of the three main peaks. The total moving time is between four and seven hours. The summit provides an unobstructed vantage point over Howe Sound, the town of Squamish, and the peaks of Garibaldi Provincial Park.

Elfin Lakes Trail

A long but rewarding day on the Elfin Lakes Trail in Garibaldi Provincial Park. This is an out-and-back hike with a total moving time of about six hours. The trail maintains a steady, manageable grade on a wide path, climbing through the forest before opening up into expansive subalpine meadows. The route is surrounded by towering, glacier-capped peaks. The destination is a pair of small lakes; one is designated for drinking water, while the other offers a brutally cold but refreshing swim.

Whistler's High Note Trail

A day trip north to Whistler for a high-alpine trek. The day begins with a ride up the Whistler Gondola to access the trailhead for the High Note Trail. This 9.5km loop traces the upper ridges of Whistler Mountain, involving roughly 420m of elevation gain and loss over about four hours. The trail is known for its commanding views of the surrounding Garibaldi Ranges, the iconic Black Tusk pinnacle, and the vibrant turquoise water of Cheakamus Lake far below. After the hike, there's time to explore Whistler Village before returning to Squamish.

Return to Vancouver

The final morning involves breaking camp in Squamish and making the return drive south to Vancouver. The 120km journey down the Sea to Sky Highway takes between two and three hours, depending on traffic. The trip concludes upon arrival back in the city.
