This is a big one: a two-country, four-week highlight reel that connects the dots from Auckland to Brisbane. Planning this solo is a massive logistics puzzle of buses, ferries, and a cross-Tasman flight. This route handles the transport so you can focus on the good stuff: learning to surf in Raglan, hiking a glacier at Franz Josef, and hitting the east coast surf towns from Sydney to Byron Bay. It’s the classic ANZ backpacker circuit, just with a built-in crew from day one.

A month-long route from New Zealand's North Island down to the South, before jumping to Australia for a classic East Coast run from Sydney to Brisbane. Expect surf lessons, glacier hikes, and plenty of nights out.

What Coordinating This Route Involves

The real work in a 29-day trip is juggling the bookings: 28 nights across 15 different properties, plus 22 separate transport legs to cover 3,118 km. That’s before you start lining up 19 activities or figuring out the two transfer days with stops built-in. While you could stitch it all together, the one piece you can't reserve online is a ready-made group of hostel mates. An organized route isn't just about outsourcing the logistics; it's about having a crew waiting for you from day one.

The Route, Day by Day

Each leg of the journey mapped out — where the day takes you, what's actually on the ground, and things to consider when planning this tour.

Day 1 of 29

Auckland

Arrival in Auckland

Land in Auckland, drop your bags at the hostel, and meet the rest of the crew in the evening. There are no formal plans until then, so if you land early, you have a free afternoon to get your bearings. A walk around the Viaduct Harbour or up Queen Street is an easy way to kill a few hours before the trip properly kicks off.

Day 2 of 29

Auckland/Raglan

South to Surf Town Raglan

The road trip starts for real today, heading south from Auckland along backroads toward the west coast. The first stop is a short walk through native bush to the base of Bridal Veil Falls. From there, it's on to the surf town of Raglan, famous for its black sand beaches.

Drop your gear at the hostel and get straight on the water for a bit of sea kayaking around the harbour's more remote bays. The accommodation is right in the middle of town, making it easy to find a pub for dinner once you're done.

Day at a glance

  • Overland journey to Raglan (160km)
  • Walk to Bridal Veil Falls
  • Sea kayaking on Raglan Harbour (1.5-2h)
  • Accommodation: Raglan Backpackers & Waterfront Lodge
  • Meals: Breakfast

DIY Reality Check: Planning a sea kayaking trip in Raglan involves more than just finding a rental shop. Under New Zealand law, all commercial adventure activity operators must pass a rigorous safety audit and be officially registered with WorkSafe NZ. This means an independent traveler is responsible for vetting potential outfitters against this national registry to ensure they comply with the Health and Safety at Work Regulations 2016. Furthermore, this activity must be precisely timed to fit a travel day that already includes a 160km drive and a stop at Bridal Veil Falls, creating a tight logistical chain. A coordinated trip removes this operational burden, arriving with a pre-vetted, compliant operator ready and waiting.

Day 3 of 29

Raglan

Surf Lesson on a Black Sand Beach

Most of the morning is dedicated to a surf lesson on Raglan's famous break. The instructors get everyone started on the sand before you hit the water, and the soft-top boards are forgiving enough for first-timers. The afternoon is completely free. You can head back to the beach, wander through the town's surf shops and cafes, or just hang out at the hostel with your new mates.

Been to Raglan, Surf Lesson on a Black Sand Beach? Create an account and share your photos with other travelers planning this trip.

Day at a glance

  • Surf lesson on Raglan's black sand beach (1.5-2h)
  • Free afternoon to relax or explore the town
  • take in the laid-back coastal atmosphere
  • Accommodation: Raglan Backpackers & Waterfront Lodge
  • Meals: Breakfast & Dinner

DIY Reality Check: While New Zealand law requires all adventure operators to be registered for safety, vetting a quality surf lesson in a popular hub like Raglan involves more specific diligence. The national governing body, Surfing New Zealand, accredits schools where instructors must hold, at minimum, an International Surfing Association (ISA) Level One certification. This qualification is more than a simple sign-up; it requires logged coaching hours and a current First Aid/CPR certificate. An independent traveler is therefore responsible for cross-referencing potential schools against both the national WorkSafe registry and Surfing New Zealand's list of approved providers to ensure their instructor is properly certified. A coordinated trip removes this operational burden, arriving with a pre-vetted, compliant operator that meets both national safety laws and specific industry standards for instruction.
