The final leg requires a long drive south to the coast, where you can snorkel with sea turtles right off the shore in Hikkaduwa.
Crossing the island means swapping the misty cloud forests of Horton Plains for the historic seaside ramparts of Galle Fort.
Arrival in Negombo
Day 1 of 12Land in Sri Lanka and make your way to the hotel in Negombo. It's a beach town with canals and fish markets, but the main event today is meeting the crew. Drop your bags and find the group for dinner and drinks at a local spot. It's a good chance to get a handle on Sri Lankan food before the trip really kicks off.

Ruins, Rocks, and Elephants
Day 2 of 12The trip gets moving with an overland journey inland to Sigiriya, the island's cultural core. You'll get there with the afternoon free, and there are a few big choices to make. Your best bet is to pick one: the Dambulla Cave Temple, a climb up the iconic Sigiriya Rock Fortress, or an evening safari drive in Minneriya National Park to look for elephants. You can't do all three, so pick your priority.

Free Day in the Cultural Triangle
Day 3 of 12You've got a full free day based in Sigiriya to dig into the region's ancient history. The two main options are day trips to the sprawling ruins of either Polonnaruwa or Anuradhapura. Both are former capitals, both are huge, and both will take up most of your day. Decide with the group which one to hit, or split up and compare notes later.

Spice Gardens and Village Life
Day 4 of 12Today is a deep dive into rural Sri Lankan life. On the way to Digana, you'll stop at a spice garden to see where cinnamon, pepper, and cardamom actually come from. After lunch, a walk through a local village gets you away from the main tourist trail; you'll see a few small farms and stop for a cup of herbal tea at a local home. The day ends with a hands-on cooking lesson, where you'll help prepare a spread of curries for dinner.

Kandy's Temple and Free Time
Day 5 of 12After breakfast overlooking the Victoria Reservoir, it's a short drive to Kandy, Sri Lanka's second city. The afternoon is yours to explore. The main draw is the Temple of the Sacred Tooth, a major pilgrimage site. If temples aren't your thing, you could check out a traditional Kandyan cultural show for some local music and dance, or just find a bar and watch the city go by.

Hill Country and Tea Plantations
Day 6 of 12Kick off the day with breakfast at Sthree Craft Shop and Café, a social enterprise that supports local women and youth with disabilities. From Kandy, the route climbs into the misty green hills of tea country. The destination is Nuwara Eliya, a town with a distinct colonial British feel. You'll visit a tea plantation to see how the world's most famous tea is grown, picked, and processed before it ends up in your mug.

High Plains and the Road to Ella
Day 7 of 12If you're up for an early start, the morning option is a trek in Horton Plains National Park, a high-altitude plateau with grasslands and cloud forests. It's known for morning mist and the sharp drop-off at World's End. Later, it's a two-hour drive to Ella, a laid-back backpacker hub wedged into the hills. The evening is free to find some food and check out the town's main strip.

Day 8 of 12The classic Ella morning involves a two-hour trek up Little Adam's Peak. It's a straightforward hike that pays off with 360-degree views of the surrounding tea-covered mountains, including the massive Ella Rock. The rest of the day is free. Your best move is to use the time to see the iconic Nine Arches Bridge—check the train schedule to time your visit—or hike to one of the nearby waterfalls like Ravana Falls.

Galle Fort and the Southern Coast
Day 9 of 12Time to trade the hills for the coast. It's a long drive south, broken up by a stop at Galle Fort. This isn't just a ruin; it's a walled city-within-a-city, full of Dutch-colonial architecture, cafés, and shops, all inside 16th-century ramparts that survived the 2004 tsunami. After exploring the fort, the final leg of the journey takes you to Hikkaduwa, a classic beach town, where you'll crash for the night right by the ocean.

Beach Day and a Big Night Out
Day 10 of 12A full free day in Hikkaduwa to do as much or as little as you want. The options are all beach-related: find a sun lounger, go for a swim, or head out on a boat trip to look for whales and dolphins (in season). After sunset, the plan is a big night out. The group will head to one of the main beach bars to hang out, dance, and see where the night goes.

Hikkaduwa Recovery and Farewell Dinner
Day 11 of 12Your last full day in Hikkaduwa is built for recovering from the night before. You have a completely free day to relax on the beach, wander through the town, or grab a mask to snorkel with sea turtles right off the shore. Later, base yourself at Coral Rock by Bansei Hikkaduwa and round up the crew for one last night out. Find a lively spot along the sand for cheap eats and cold drinks to close out your time on the coast.

Day 12 of 12That's a wrap. After a dozen days of ruins, tea hills, and beaches, the trip is over. Pack your bags, swap socials with your new friends, and head out whenever you're ready. There's no planned schedule, so you can leave at any time.
