Sri Lanka: Ancient Cities, Tea Highlands & Wildlife Parks

Arrive at any time into Sri Lanka's commercial capital, Colombo. An included transfer from Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) brings you to your hotel. The day is unstructured, allowing for acclimatization or a preliminary walk through the city's bustling streets, a landscape of colonial-era buildings, modern commercial towers, and vibrant street markets.

The day begins with a visit to a coconut plantation, a cornerstone of Sri Lanka's agricultural economy, to observe how the crop is processed. From there, the route heads north to Wilpattu National Park, a four to five-hour drive that forms the first leg of a 220-kilometre overland journey from Colombo to Anuradhapura. As one of the oldest and largest protected areas in the country, Wilpattu is renowned for its population of Sri Lankan leopards (Panthera pardus kotiya). An afternoon 4x4 safari through the park offers opportunities to track leopards, elephants, sloth bears, and spotted deer. The route winds through a distinctive landscape of villus, or natural lakes, where the ecosystem faces ongoing challenges from human encroachment and wildlife conservation issues along its borders. The day concludes with a short drive to Anuradhapura for an overnight stay at the Rajarata Hotel.

Today is dedicated to exploring the sprawling archaeological site of Anuradhapura, the first capital of Sri Lanka and a centre of Theravada Buddhism for centuries. Now a UNESCO World Heritage site, the complex contains a rich collection of ruins, including vast dagobas (stupas), palaces, monastic buildings, and gardens. A guided tour provides historical context for this symbol of ancient Sinhalese power. The afternoon is left free for independent exploration, allowing for a more personal pace to wander among the ancient structures and sacred bo-trees.

The route continues to the agricultural village of Habarana for an immersion into rural Sri Lankan life. The visit includes a journey by traditional bullock cart through vegetable fields and rice paddies, offering a ground-level view of the region's farming practices. After a walk through the village, a canoe provides passage across a local lake, a key feature of the area's ancient irrigation network. A lunch of regional specialties follows before the final leg of the day's journey, an overland drive of about two hours to Dambulla, a key hub in the Cultural Triangle.

The morning is dedicated to ascending Sigiriya, or Lion's Rock, a 5th-century fortress and palace complex built atop a monolithic granite outcrop. The climb to the 370-meter summit involves a series of staircases, passing the famous Sigiriya frescoes—ancient paintings of female figures—and the 'Mirror Wall' with its centuries of graffiti. The summit holds the ruins of the upper palace, offering panoramic views across the jungle and the extensive water gardens at the rock's base. The afternoon is free to relax or explore the area around Dambulla at your own pace.

The day begins at the Dambulla Cave Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the largest, best-preserved cave-temple complex in Sri Lanka. The five caves contain a trove of Buddhist art, with hundreds of statues and extensive murals dating back to the 1st century BCE. The journey then continues towards Kandy, with a stop in Matale to visit a spice garden. Here, you can learn about the cultivation and traditional therapeutic uses of cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.

Upon arrival in Kandy, the last royal capital of Sri Lanka, the focus shifts to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa). This important pilgrimage site houses a canine tooth of the Buddha. The day concludes with a performance of traditional Kandyan music and dance.

Kandy served as the capital of the last Sinhala kingdom until its fall to the British in 1815. The route begins at the Royal Botanic Gardens of Peradeniya, once the exclusive domain of Kandyan royalty, now celebrated for its vast collection of orchids and mature avenues of palms. Afterwards, the journey continues to the Sthree Craft Shop and Café, a women's empowerment project and social enterprise that provides training and employment for local women and youth with disabilities. A handicraft demonstration here is followed by a high tea tasting featuring local teas and pastries. The remainder of the day is well spent exploring the area around Kandy Lake, or learning about traditional ayurvedic treatments in the town.

A scenic overland journey climbs from Kandy into the cool, misty highlands of Nuwara Eliya, the heart of Sri Lanka's tea country. The landscape transforms into a rolling carpet of verdant tea bushes. A visit to a tea plantation provides direct insight into the production of Ceylon tea, from plucking to processing, culminating in a tasting. The afternoon includes a tour of Nuwara Eliya itself, a town that retains a distinct British colonial character from its time as a retreat for English and Scottish planters. Its colonial-era bungalows, hedgerows, and cool climate stand in stark contrast to the tropical lowlands. An optional high tea can be taken at the Grand Hotel, the former residence of Governor Sir Edward Barnes.

An early start is required for the drive to Horton Plains National Park, a protected montane ecosystem of cloud forest and high-altitude grassland. The primary activity is a nine-kilometre trek through this unique environment, taking approximately four to four and a half hours, which is home to many endemic species. The hike culminates at a sheer escarpment known as World's End, which on a clear morning offers expansive views over the southern plains towards the coast. After a picnic breakfast, an overland journey of approximately 140 kilometres descends from the highlands to Athgira River Camp on the border of Udawalawe National Park. The drive takes four to five hours, concluding with a barbecue dinner.

Udawalawe National Park is one of the most reliable places in the world for observing wild Asian elephants, as the open grasslands and Udawalawe Reservoir attract large herds. Today is dedicated to exploring this sanctuary on a three-hour jeep safari. The park was created to provide a refuge for wildlife displaced by the construction of the reservoir in the 1970s. Beyond the significant elephant population, the safari offers opportunities to spot water buffalo, jackals, sambar, and spotted deer, as well as a rich variety of birdlife. The remainder of the day is spent at the camp, observing the rhythms of the wilderness.

The morning begins with a cooking demonstration by the camp chef, showcasing techniques for preparing local Sri Lankan dishes. Following this, a long overland journey of five to six hours traces a path from the southern plains to the west coast town of Negombo. Historically a major center for the cinnamon trade, Negombo's colonial past is evident in its architecture, reflecting periods of Portuguese, Dutch, and British control. The afternoon is unstructured, offering time to explore the old Dutch Fort, visit one of the town's ornate Catholic churches, or walk along the wide expanse of Negombo beach.

The journey concludes this morning in Negombo. There are no planned activities, allowing for departure at any time. The town's proximity to Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) makes it a convenient final stop for arranging onward travel.
