The Route, Day by Day
Each leg of the journey mapped out — where the day takes you, what's actually on the ground, and things to consider when planning this tour.
Arrival in Colombo
Arrive at any time into Sri Lanka's commercial capital, Colombo. An included transfer from Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) brings you to your hotel. The day is unstructured, allowing for acclimatization or a preliminary walk through the city's bustling streets, a landscape of colonial-era buildings, modern commercial towers, and vibrant street markets.

DIY Reality Check: While Colombo's airport has an official taxi counter with fixed rates, the Australian government advises travelers to arrange transport through a reputable company due to security risks. This leaves independent arrivals to vet and book a provider in advance, or navigate the airport's mix of official taxis, public buses—which Canada's government deems generally unsafe—and ride-hailing apps with fluctuating availability, especially for the many international flights that land late at night. A pre-arranged transfer sidesteps this immediate vetting and logistical challenge.
Leopards of Wilpattu National Park
The day begins with a visit to a coconut plantation, a cornerstone of Sri Lanka's agricultural economy, to observe how the crop is processed. From there, the route heads north for a four to five-hour overland journey to Wilpattu National Park, among the oldest and largest protected areas in the country. The park is renowned for its significant population of Sri Lankan leopards (Panthera pardus kotiya).
An afternoon 4x4 safari with a local expert provides opportunities to track leopards, elephants, sloth bears, and spotted deer through the park's distinctive landscape of natural lakes, or 'villus'. The discussion will also cover the complex issues of wildlife conservation and human-wildlife conflict at the park's borders. The day concludes with a short drive to the ancient city of Anuradhapura.

The Ancient Capital of Anuradhapura
Today is dedicated to exploring the sprawling archaeological site of Anuradhapura, the first capital of Sri Lanka and a centre of Theravada Buddhism for centuries. Now a UNESCO World Heritage site, the complex contains a rich collection of ruins, including vast dagobas (stupas), palaces, monastic buildings, and gardens. A guided tour provides historical context for this symbol of ancient Sinhalese power. The afternoon is left free for independent exploration, allowing for a more personal pace to wander among the ancient structures and sacred bo-trees.
