Bogotá to Santa Marta: Colombia's Coffee, Cities & Coast

Arrive in Bogotá at any time. El Dorado International Airport (BOG) serves the city, and from there it's a taxi or bus ride into your chosen neighborhood. Settle in, drop your bags, and start to acclimatize to the 2,640m elevation. A short walk around your base is enough for day one.

A morning flight takes you from Bogotá's high-altitude plains into the heart of Colombia's coffee country. Landing in Armenia, the capital of the Quindío department, the air gets warmer and thicker. The next two nights are based in a traditional hacienda outside the city, offering a direct look into the region's agricultural life and landscape.

The day starts in the city of Armenia with a visit to its central market, a busy hub of produce stalls, flower shops, and local life. From there, the route pushes into the Calarcá area, one of the key municipalities in the coffee axis. A tour of a local coffee farm breaks down the entire process, from bean to cup, explaining the cultivation and production that defines this part of Colombia.

A morning hike cuts through the Cocora Valley, a landscape famous for its towering Quindío wax palms, the national tree of Colombia. The afternoon is open for independent exploration. Options include riding the Metrocable for panoramic views of the valley, visiting the museums in the city center, or taking a day trip out to the massive El Peñol rock.

A full, unstructured day in Medellín offers a chance to go deeper. A popular option is the two-hour bus ride to Guatapé, a small town known for its brightly painted houses and the nearby monolith, El Peñol de Guatapé. Climbing the 740 steps to its summit provides a commanding view of the surrounding lakes. Alternatively, stay in the city and explore its parks, markets, and public art.

Trade the mountains for the coast with a morning flight from Medellín to Cartagena. The journey is about 90 minutes, arriving on the Caribbean. After settling in, the afternoon is best spent on an orientation walk through the historic walled city, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Get your bearings among the colonial architecture, plazas, and fortified walls before finding a spot for dinner.

A full day to explore Cartagena at your own pace. Wander deeper into the old city, explore the Getsemaní neighborhood with its street art and lively plazas, or head to the beaches of Bocagrande. The city's history is dense, with forts, churches, and museums to fill the day. Or, simply find a cafe and absorb the Caribbean atmosphere.

A half-day city tour provides a structured look at Cartagena's key historical sites. The route typically includes the massive Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas, a 17th-century fortress with commanding views, and the Convento De La Popa, a convent perched on the highest hill overlooking the city. A walking tour connects notable sites like the Plaza Bolivar and Santo Domingo Church. The afternoon is free. Note that hot water can be a rarity in this part of Colombia.

Leave the coastal heat of Cartagena behind for the cooler air of the Sierra Nevada foothills. The overland journey takes you to Minca, a small mountain town that has become a hub for backpackers and birdwatchers. The afternoon is free to explore the town, hike to a nearby waterfall, or settle in at a riverside cafe. The vibe is relaxed, a sharp contrast to the city.

The day is focused on the indigenous cultures of the Sierra Nevada. From Minca, travel to the Katanzama community for a visit with the Arhuaco people. This offers a chance to learn about their traditions and worldview, and see a demonstration of their traditional textile weaving. Following the visit, a short overland transfer of about an hour leads to your base for the next two nights, located just outside the entrance to Tayrona National Park.

A full day is dedicated to exploring Tayrona National Park with a local guide. The park protects a stretch of Caribbean coast backed by the Sierra Nevada mountains. A moderate hike of three to four hours follows jungle trails that open onto stunning beaches and coves. The route offers opportunities to see the region's diverse wildlife and learn about its ecosystems. After the hike, return to the nearby accommodation to relax. Note that the park closes periodically for spiritual and ecological restoration.

The day is unstructured, with plenty of time to soak up the Caribbean atmosphere.

The trip concludes today in Santa Marta. There are no planned activities, leaving you free to depart at any time. Pack up, have a final Colombian coffee, and make your way to Simón Bolívar International Airport (SMR) for your onward flight.
