This is a compact, six-day survey of Montenegro, connecting the well-trodden Bay of Kotor with the country's rugged northern highlands. The route is efficient, moving from the Adriatic coast into the mountains around Žabljak and Kolašin before finishing in Podgorica. It’s a logical path for travelers short on time who want a cross-section of the country's landscapes—from coastal towns to mountain parks—without the logistical puzzle of linking them independently.

A six-day route from the Adriatic coast at Kotor, pushing inland through the rugged highlands of Žabljak and Kolašin, and ending in the capital, Podgorica.

What Coordinating This Route Involves

Booking this route independently means managing five nights of accommodation across four different properties and arranging six separate transport legs to cover the 425 km. The plan must also weave in nine activities, with the main complication on the two days where a stop is built into a city-to-city transfer, requiring more than a simple point-to-point ticket. An organised route’s value isn’t in the individual bookings, but in making sure all those moving parts connect on a tight, six-day schedule, which is where the real administrative work lies.

The Route, Day by Day

Each leg of the journey mapped out — where the day takes you, what's actually on the ground, and things to consider when planning this tour.

Day 1 of 6

Kotor

Arrival in Kotor's Walled City

Arrive in Kotor at any time. The city is compact, so drop your bags and head straight for the Stari Grad (Old Town). An evening walk is the best way to get oriented, tracing the narrow limestone streets and finding the main squares before the day-trippers return tomorrow.

Day 2 of 6

Kotor

Bay of Kotor & Historic Perast

A boat trip from Kotor's port is the standard way to see the bay. The route passes several small islands, including the artificial Our Lady of the Rocks, before docking at the historic town of Perast. Spend some time exploring its quiet, stone-palace-lined waterfront before the return trip to Kotor around midday. The afternoon is free for independent exploration—options include sea kayaking or visiting the Maritime Museum.

Day 3 of 6

Kotor/Žabljak

Coastal Budva to Durmitor's Peaks

The day is a long overland push from the coast into the highlands. The first leg runs south to the seaport of Budva for a walk through its Venetian-walled Stari Grad. From there, the road turns inland, climbing for roughly 90 minutes to the Ostrog Monastery, a 17th-century pilgrimage site built dramatically into a vertical cliff face.

The final two-hour drive cuts through the rugged landscape of Durmitor National Park. A stop at the Black Lake for a short walk breaks up the journey before arriving in Žabljak for the night.

DIY Reality Check: Replicating this overland journey by public transport is operationally fraught, as no direct service connects Budva, Ostrog, and Žabljak. A DIY traveler would have to patch together multiple buses, trains, and expensive taxis, with one travel account noting that online train schedules can be unreliable. Opting for a rental car presents its own challenges, namely the final ascent to Ostrog Monastery on a road described as narrow, steep, and winding with numerous hairpin turns. During peak season, the upper car park often fills by mid-morning, forcing drivers to a lower lot that requires either a 30-minute uphill walk or a wait for a separate shuttle van to reach the top. Furthermore, entry to the monastery requires a strict, non-negotiable dress code—shoulders and knees covered—which visitors arriving from the coast may not be prepared for. A coordinated trip in a private vehicle sidesteps this entire chain of logistical friction.
