A week of island-hopping by speedboat across the Galápagos, staying on Santa Cruz, Isabela, and San Cristóbal. See the sea lions and giant tortoises without the liveaboard price tag.
Most people think the Galápagos means a week stuck on a boat. This route proves them wrong. It's a land-based, island-hopping plan that uses local speedboats to connect the main hubs. You get the same wildlife—giant tortoises, marine iguanas, sea lions—but with your feet on the ground and evenings free to find a cheap dinner or a bar with the rest of the crew. It’s the Galápagos for travelers who’d rather spend their money on experiences than a fancy cabin.

Day 1 of 7
Santa Cruz Island
Arrival on Santa Cruz
Land at the airport on Baltra Island (GPS) before 11 am to make the group meetup. You'll take a bus and a ferry to get across to Santa Cruz Island, then an overland transfer to the main town of Puerto Ayora. Drop your bag at the hotel and meet the rest of the crew around 1 pm for a walk over to the Charles Darwin Research Station to see the giant tortoises. The first night is for sorting out the group and finding a bar.

DIY Reality Check: Your first hour in the Galápagos is a rapid-fire sequence of mandatory fees and multi-stage transfers. Before even leaving the Baltra airport, you must pay the Galápagos National Park entrance fee—$200 for most foreign adults—in cash. You'll also need a separate $20, cash-only, for the Transit Control Card (TCT) at the airport counter. From there, a DIY journey to the main town of Puerto Ayora requires stitching together three separate, independently paid services: a $5 bus to the Itabaca Channel, a $1 ferry across it, and finally a $25 taxi or another $5 bus for the final 45-minute drive into town. Navigating this chain with luggage, in a new country, and on a tight timeline to meet a group requires precise coordination. A trip with pre-arranged transport handles this entire sequence, moving you seamlessly from the airport arrival hall to your hotel.
It’s an early start for the speedboat to Isabela Island. The ride can get choppy, especially from July to December, so pop a seasickness pill if you need one. Once you land and drop your bags, the afternoon is a hike up the Sierra Negra volcano. You'll trek about 7km total across a wild, moon-like landscape of lava fields to the rim of the massive crater. The views over the rest of the island are worth the effort.

Day 3 of 7
Isabela Island
Free Day on Isabela
Today is a free day on Isabela, so you can go as hard or as chill as you want. The main optional activity is a boat trip out to Los Tuneles for snorkeling, which is a solid choice but costs extra. If you're on a tighter budget, you can snorkel at Tintoreras, try to find a surf lesson, or just claim a spot on the beach and do nothing at all. Your call.
