Galápagos Wildlife: Santa Cruz & Isabela Islands — A Luxury Route
8-day itinerary
An eight-day route focused on the Galápagos' two most dynamic islands, Isabela and Santa Cruz, pairing boutique hotel stays with snorkelling at Los Túneles and meals at a private highland reserve.
This itinerary is designed for a land-based exploration of the Galápagos, bypassing the typical liveaboard cruise for stays at design-led hotels on Isabela and Santa Cruz islands. The advantage is deeper immersion on each island and access to specific sites like the lava tunnels of Los Túneles for snorkelling. It solves the logistical friction of island-hopping, coordinating boat charters, and securing tables at sought-after local restaurants, while still allowing for unstructured time to explore towns like Puerto Villamil at a relaxed pace.

Day 1 of 8
Quito, Ecuador
Arrival in the Andean Highlands
Arrive into Quito's Mariscal Sucre International Airport, set on a high-altitude plateau surrounded by Andean peaks. A private car provides a direct transfer to a hotel conveniently located near the airport, allowing for a seamless check-in and a chance to acclimatize to the elevation before the next day's early start. The evening is for settling in before the journey to the islands begins.

Day 2 of 8
Isabela Island, Galápagos
To the Galápagos: Isabela Island
The day begins with an early morning flight from Quito, crossing 1,000 kilometres of ocean to Baltra Island, the main entry point for the Galápagos. From the airport, a short public bus ride leads to the Itabaca Channel for a quick ferry crossing. On the other side, a private vehicle waits for the overland journey to Puerto Ayora for lunch. The final leg is a two-hour speedboat ride to Isabela Island, the archipelago's largest. After checking into the Iguana Crossing Boutique Hotel, the evening includes a hands-on lesson in preparing ceviche, a staple of the coastal culture.

DIY Reality Check: Reaching Isabela Island requires navigating a chain of pre-booked tickets and tightly coordinated transfers, starting before you even leave the mainland. At the Quito airport, travelers must secure a $20 Transit Control Card (TCT) from the Galápagos Government Council counter *before* airline check-in. Upon landing at Baltra, you must pay the $200 Galápagos National Park entrance fee in cash. From there, the journey involves a public bus, a channel ferry crossing, a 45-minute overland vehicle to Puerto Ayora, and finally, a 2-hour public speedboat to Isabela. A flight delay could cause you to miss the last speedboat, forcing an unscheduled overnight stay in Puerto Ayora. This entire sequence is further complicated by scheduled runway maintenance at Quito's airport, which will cause flight suspensions on multiple Saturdays in 2026. A coordinated trip manages the TCT paperwork, all transport connections, and any flight rescheduling caused by airport maintenance.
A morning boat departs from Puerto Villamil for Los Túneles, a striking coastal landscape formed by collapsed lava tubes that create natural arches and tunnels above and below the water. The site's calm, clear shallows are ideal for snorkelling, offering close observation of sea turtles, eagle rays, and schools of reef fish. A short walk along the lava formations often reveals nesting blue-footed boobies and sunbathing marine iguanas. Lunch is served on board the boat during the return trip, leaving the afternoon and evening free to explore Puerto Villamil or relax at the hotel.
