An Unfiltered Travel Guide & Photo Diary

Japan: Kyoto, Tokyo & the Michinoku Coastal Trail — A Curated Route

An 11-day route from Kyoto's cultural heart to Tokyo, with a focus on northern Honshu's landscapes—hiking the Michinoku Coastal Trail, kayaking Lake Tazawa, and staying near the Nyuto Onsen hot springs.

This itinerary connects Japan's classic urban bookends—Kyoto and Tokyo—with a deep dive into the Tōhoku region, an area often missed on first-time routes. It's designed for travelers who want to access the remote Michinoku Coastal Trail and secluded Nyuto Onsen hot springs without navigating the region's complex rural train schedules and language barriers. The value is in the seamless logistics: private transfers, pre-booked trail access, and stays in carefully selected ryokans, which can be difficult to secure independently. It's Japan beyond the bullet train.

The Route, Day by Day

Each leg of the journey mapped out — where the day takes you, what's actually on the ground, and things to consider when planning this tour.

Day 1 of 11

Kyoto

Arrival in Kyoto

Arrival into Japan is via Kyoto, the nation's cultural capital for more than a millennium. After settling into the hotel in the city's Higashiyama district, the best way to acclimate is a short walk to get your bearings and stretch your legs after the flight. The evening is for relaxing ahead of the journey's start.

Day at a glance

  • Arrive at any time in Kyoto, Japan's former imperial capital.
  • Accommodation: The Hotel Higashiyama by Kyoto Tokyu.
  • An initial orientation walk through the historic Higashiyama district.
  • Dinner is included on the first evening.

DIY Reality Check: Securing a well-located hotel in Kyoto's prime Higashiyama district is a significant operational challenge, especially during the peak cherry blossom (March-April) and autumn foliage (November) seasons. Prices during these periods can be two to three times higher than average, and desirable hotels often sell out 6 to 12 months in advance. A DIY traveler faces a competitive booking landscape where even a year out, availability can be scarce, forcing compromises on location or quality. A coordinated trip removes this entire sourcing and booking burden by securing rooms in a vetted, central hotel long before they're available to the general public.

Day 2 of 11

Kyoto

Hiking the Kitayama Villages

A local train and subway ride leads north of the city to the Kitayama mountains, a quiet contrast to Kyoto's urban core. The day's hike begins at Kurama village, following a forested path of stone steps and spring water outlets to the neighboring village of Kibune. Along the way, the route passes the mountain-top Kurama-dera temple and the Kifune shrine, deep in the canopied forest.

The afternoon is spent back in Kyoto for a walking tour through Gion, the city's historic geisha district. Main luggage is forwarded overnight via a luggage service, a common and highly efficient Japanese system that avoids hauling large bags on crowded trains.

Day at a glance

  • Hike from Kurama to Kibune village in the Kitayama mountains (3.9km, 2.5 hours).
  • Visit Kurama-dera temple and Kifune shrine along the trail.
  • Afternoon walking tour of Kyoto's historic Gion district.
  • Main luggage is forwarded overnight via takkyubin service to Lake Tazawa.
  • Accommodation: The Hotel Higashiyama by Kyoto Tokyu.

DIY Reality Check: While Japan's *takkyubin* luggage forwarding system is famously efficient, arranging it as a DIY traveler presents a distinct set of logistical hurdles. The process requires correctly completing a multi-part waybill for each bag, a form that is often primarily in Japanese. A traveler must accurately provide the destination hotel's full address and phone number, their own name as it appears on the future reservation, and specify the exact delivery date—an error in any field can lead to significant delays. While most hotels and many convenience stores can assist, the service is not guaranteed everywhere, and staff assistance may be limited. Arranging the service also takes time, requiring travelers to coordinate drop-offs around morning collection schedules so as not to miss their own train. A coordinated trip removes this entire administrative layer, handling the forms, payments, and logistics of ensuring luggage arrives at the correct destination on the correct day.

Day 3 of 11

Lake Tazawa

Japan's Deepest Lake

The morning begins by boarding a Shinkansen (bullet train) for the five-hour journey north to the Akita prefecture. Lunch is a classic Japanese bento box, eaten on board as the scenery of central Honshu passes by at high speed. The destination is Lake Tazawa, the deepest lake in Japan, known for its startlingly blue, clear water.

The afternoon presents a choice. One option is to explore the lake's placid surface by kayak, taking in views of the volcanic Mt. Akita-Komagatake. The other is a relaxing cycle tour through the surrounding rice paddies and mountainside communities, getting a feel for the region's quiet, rural pace.
