This route is designed for the traveler interested in the deep historical strata of central and southern Spain. The itinerary follows a logical progression from the imperial capital of Madrid to the heart of Al-Andalus, focusing on the architectural and cultural synthesis of Moorish, Jewish, and Christian traditions. It prioritizes sites like Toledo's syncretic old town, Córdoba's Mezquita-Cathedral, and Granada's Alhambra, examining them not as isolated monuments but as points in a continuous historical narrative. The path is ideal for those who value scholarly context over a rapid survey of regional highlights.

An 8-day overland route from Madrid through the historic heart of Andalucia, tracing the region's Moorish legacy from Córdoba's Mezquita to Granada's Alhambra and concluding in Seville.

The Route, Day by Day

Each leg of the journey mapped out — where the day takes you, what's actually on the ground, and things to consider when planning this tour.

Day 1 of 8

Madrid

Arrival in Madrid

Arrive in Madrid at any time and make your way to the hotel. Depending on your arrival, the city's central districts offer a dense introduction to Spanish urban life. The grand artery of the Gran Vía connects several key plazas, but the true heart of the old city is the Plaza Mayor, a vast, enclosed square dating to the Hapsburg period. The only fixed item is an evening welcome meeting at the joining hotel where the National Geographic Expedition Leader gathers the group.

Day 2 of 8

Madrid

Art and Markets of the Capital

A morning orientation walk traces the historical layers of Madrid, from its medieval squares to its elegant 18th-century plazas. The walk concludes at a local market, a chance to sample a cross-section of Spanish gastronomy, from regional cheeses to cured Iberian ham. The afternoon is open for independent pursuits. The most significant destination is the Museo del Prado, one of the world's foremost collections of European art, with extensive holdings of Goya, Velázquez, and El Greco. Alternatives include the vast Palacio Real or the botanical gardens next to the Prado.

DIY Reality Check: An open afternoon in Madrid sounds simple, but securing entry to its world-class attractions requires advance planning that can clash with a flexible itinerary. For the Museo del Prado, same-day tickets are often unavailable, as timed-entry slots sell out, especially during peak seasons. The museum itself recommends online booking to avoid long queues, which can stretch for up to two hours for those without pre-purchased tickets. Similarly, the Royal Palace—an active state facility that can close for official events on short notice—operates with timed entry, and tickets must be bought for every visitor, regardless of age. While free-entry hours exist for both, they attract enormous crowds, with lines forming long before the designated time and no guarantee of entry due to capacity limits. Coordinating these separate, timed bookings as a DIY traveler means locking in your afternoon well in advance, leaving little room for spontaneous discovery.

Day 3 of 8

Madrid/Córdoba

Toledo and the Road to Córdoba

The route heads south from Madrid to Toledo, a fortified city set on a promontory above the Tagus River. A local historian leads a walk through the UNESCO-listed old quarter, a dense warren of streets that reflects its past as a center for Christian, Jewish, and Muslim cultures. Key structures include the city's 13th-century cathedral, a prime example of High Gothic architecture, alongside historic synagogues and mosques. From Toledo, the overland journey continues south into Andalusia, ending in Córdoba. Once the capital of Al-Andalus, or Muslim Spain, Córdoba was Western Europe's largest and most advanced city for nearly three centuries.
