For a DIY traveler, this means vetting and booking a reputable transport company in advance, or navigating the airport's taxi ranks and ride-hailing options upon arrival while avoiding the unsolicited drivers known to approach travelers inside the terminal. The Rift Valley & Lake Nakuru

The day begins with an early overland journey from Nairobi, tracing a route northwest into the Great Rift Valley. The destination is Lake Nakuru National Park, a protected area centered on one of the valley's shallow, alkaline soda lakes. The high pH supports dense blooms of cyanobacteria, which in turn attract vast congregations of lesser flamingos, though populations fluctuate with water levels.

After arriving at a safari lodge inside the park for lunch, the afternoon is dedicated to a wildlife drive. The park is a designated rhino sanctuary, offering a high probability of sighting both black and white rhinoceros species. It also serves as a crucial conservation area for Rothschild's giraffes, which were translocated here from western Kenya beginning in 1977.

Ecology of Lake Nakuru

The park's landscape is a mosaic of grassland, acacia woodland, and rocky escarpments surrounding the alkaline lake. This variety supports over 50 mammal species, including large herds of Cape buffalo, waterbuck, and impala, as well as their predators like lions and leopards.

The drives focus on different habitats at different times of day to maximize observation opportunities. The route follows the lake's shoreline, which hosts over 450 documented bird species, before climbing into the wooded areas where Rothschild's giraffes browse and leopards may be found.
