Kenya: The Rift Valley & Masai Mara Safari

Arrive at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) in Nairobi, Kenya’s high-altitude capital city. The day is unstructured, allowing for independent transport to your hotel, acclimatization to the 1,795m elevation, and personal exploration before the main safari begins.

The day begins with an early overland journey from Nairobi, tracing a route northwest into the Great Rift Valley. The destination is Lake Nakuru National Park, a protected area centered on one of the valley's shallow, alkaline soda lakes. The high pH supports dense blooms of cyanobacteria, which in turn attract vast congregations of lesser flamingos, though populations fluctuate with water levels.

After arriving at a safari lodge inside the park for lunch, the afternoon is dedicated to a wildlife drive. The park is a designated rhino sanctuary, offering a high probability of sighting both black and white rhinoceros species. It also serves as a crucial conservation area for Rothschild's giraffes, which were translocated here from western Kenya beginning in 1977.

A full day is dedicated to exploring the diverse ecosystems of Lake Nakuru National Park through morning and afternoon safari drives. The park's landscape is a mosaic of grassland, acacia woodland, and rocky escarpments surrounding the alkaline lake. This variety supports over 50 mammal species, including large herds of Cape buffalo, waterbuck, and impala, as well as their predators like lions and leopards.

The drives focus on different habitats at different times of day to maximize observation opportunities. The route follows the lake's shoreline, which hosts over 450 documented bird species, before climbing into the wooded areas where Rothschild's giraffes browse and leopards may be found.

The overland journey south to Lake Naivasha covers 80 kilometres and takes approximately two to two and a half hours. This large freshwater body derives its name from the Maasai word nai’posha, meaning 'rough water.' A boat trip across the lake offers opportunities to spot its significant hippopotamus population and diverse birdlife, including the African fish eagle. The excursion includes a stop at Crescent Island Game Sanctuary, a private wildlife sanctuary where a walking safari allows for close, on-foot encounters with non-predatory species such as wildebeest, zebra, and giraffe. Afterwards, overnight at the Lake Naivasha Crescent Camp.

The journey turns southwest, leaving the Rift Valley lakes behind for the acacia-dotted grasslands of the Masai Mara National Reserve. The overland drive is substantial, and the final approach roads into the reserve are notoriously rough and unpaved—a necessary trade-off for accessing this remote ecosystem. After arriving and settling into a tented camp located within the greater Mara concession area, the first safari drive commences in the late afternoon.

This initial exploration introduces the classic savanna landscape and its dense populations of plains game, including zebra, giraffe, and wildebeest. It also begins the search for the large predators—lion, leopard, and cheetah—that the Mara is famous for.

An entire day is devoted to the Masai Mara, with safari drives scheduled for the early morning and late afternoon to coincide with peak animal activity. The pre-dawn drive aims to track nocturnal predators that may still be active, and to observe the plains game—such as Thomson's and Grant's gazelles, topi, and eland—during the cooler morning hours when they are most active.

The afternoon drive explores different sectors of the reserve, taking advantage of the changing light. The Mara is not a single park but a complex of public reserve and private conservancies; the day's routes are planned to cover a range of habitats, from the riverine forests along the Talek River to the open plains where large herds congregate.

A final, early morning safari drive offers one last chance to witness the Mara's savanna ecosystem waking under the rising sun. After breakfast, the long overland journey back to Nairobi begins. The route backtracks towards the Rift Valley, with a planned stop in the town of Maai Mahiu. Here, a visit to Café Ubuntu, a social enterprise and organic farm, provides a look into a community-based project that trains and employs local women and mothers of children with disabilities.

A farm-to-table lunch at the café breaks up the drive before the final leg of the journey concludes in Nairobi in the late afternoon.
